After re-loading Windows a couple times this weekend I got to wondering. What application do people around this site use for video playback?

I've used all sorts of apps over the years, Media Player Classic, VLC Player, Real, and many others. All of them worked great for their time but usually ended up having codec problems down the line from loading the wrong codec pack or just simply becoming outdated.

One of my friends moved to South Korea a few years ago and once he sent me a video clip over yahoo I couldn't play, can't remember what type of clip it was but I'm pretty sure it was a divx file of some sort. He sent me a link to http://www.GOMPlayer.com, which was just releasing its final Beta back then. I have not looked back. It does it all and then some, very lightweight and will play anything. No seperate codec packs and gets frequent updates in its polished and final form. It will play .mov too if you have quicktime installed, though some of the HD quicktime clips get pretty shaky.

I just thought I'd share since I was thinking all this while setting up a new copy of Windows. I also would like to hear what others are using around the world and to urge anyone to give GOM a try!

well, when i do a fresh windows install, i install only CCCP codec pack and that's it, it has everything in it. media player classic for video playback, subtitles load automatically etc. RMVB works, MKV works, everything works actually :D

I use media player 11 all the time with K-lite Mega codec pack( free to download on net) installed. Never have problem.

k-lite does the trick too, I usually only use WMP11 for WMV and AVI sometimes.

If I play anything with subs or multi language its going through GOM. Has a nice Subtitle browser too, Chim0 you should check it out sometime.

My main ones are VLC, WM, and Real Player. I'm going to try the GOM player and CCCP.

Yea, I used to use VLC with K-Lite Codecs for a long time too, and figured it would still be pretty popular among users here. After I found GOM I noticed that VLC has alot of features that I never take advantage of(like the LAN streaming) and ditched all together for a single solution.

I've taken to using WMP12 with the K-Lite Codec Pack here. Most other players I've used pixelate videos when I scale them up.

VLC. Got sick of hunting down codec packs for different players, since i switched to VLC i can only think of a couple of vids that failed to play. Certainly the best one i have used so far, i especially enjoy the audio EQs.
