i coppied the file "vx777_v1.1beta.rar" to my player. I did not put it in any folder.
i am using windows vista
whenever i plug my player into the computer i get a usb logo on the players screen.
i tried to start the player and hold the power button down, but after the startup screen it just goes back to the usb logo.
what am i doing wrong?

This not the .rar that you have to put on the player, but the extracted file .HXF !

Hope this clear things up.

Steps to upgrade the VX777
  • Download the vx777 firmware rar file[/*:m:217gs0wy]
  • Uncompress the rar file to a temporary directory. The new firmware has file extension .HXF[/*:m:217gs0wy]
  • Plug in the vx777 to your computer.[/*:m:217gs0wy]
  • Copy the *.HXF file to the root directory of the player[/*:m:217gs0wy]
  • Unmount the player. Make sure there is enough power in the battery for more then 10 minutes of usage.[/*:m:217gs0wy]
  • Turn off the player[/*:m:217gs0wy]
  • Turn back on. The player will automatically check for any *.HXF files in the root directory of the player. It will compare the players firmware version with the file found.[/*:m:217gs0wy]
  • If the firmware file is newer, it will start upgrading. You will see a progress bar. It should take several minutes.[/*:m:217gs0wy]
  • Once updated, all player settings should have been reset. The language setting should have reset to chinese (default). You will get a grey screen with a small cross at the corner. This is to calibrate the touch screen. Click on each cross as it appears on each corner until the touch screen has been calibrated. Go to setting and change the language.[/*:m:217gs0wy]
  • You can remove the *.HXF in the root directory if you want. If you keep it there, you will see "Same Firmware Version" at every boot up.[/*:m:217gs0wy]

I followed this procedure step by step the first time and can no longer get past the "same fireware version" screen. battery has been discharged but still no access to both drives. :( if i cant get it sorted by wednesday i will order another vx777 or try a s:flo. decisions decisions :? . hopefully raz or somebody will have an idiots guide to restoring the player.
was a brilliant player while it lasted just wish i had a bit more time to get to know it

I'm also interested in directions as I just received my player this week, and the printed manual does not contain instructions of any kind. My old Archos AV340 is probably the same style, where you place the extracted firmware image in the root directory and it checks for it on bootup, but I want to be certain before I mess with the unit. I especially am hoping for a "Pause" feature that will continue with playback after turning the unit off (as an iPod will do) but I'm not holding out much hope... I'm comfortable with firmware and electronics but don't want to brick my unit, of course.

BTW, anybody else have low volume and dismal FM reception with this unit?

When you connect the player via USB cable to your PC, does your PC still recognize the player, is so download the V1.0 firmware off Onda site and copy the HXF file to your player and redo the steps for firmware updating. Alternatively you can just try and reload the V1.1beta firmware too.
