I have had my psp(s) for about 2 years, and am currently trying get more out of it. Portals are neat, but really aren't anything special. I know one can run homebrew on the PSP, but I don't know about if it is legal. I broke my first PSP from a drop, so I really don't wan't to buy a knew one because of bricking.

My Qs:
    Legality
    usefulness
    features
    Risk of bricking
I have done some research, but became quickly confused with what frimware works with what custom frimware/method of enabling homebrew.

Thanks in Advanced!

1. Downgrading your system is completly legal. actually sony shoud provide a tool to do it.
i dont know about CF's.

2. Well, having a psp with a CF is VERY usefull. Homebrew, Not only MP4 miovies, Backups,
...

3. Features?
Homebrew:
Hb games
Hb Apps (Calculators, Msn messengers, Yahoo Messengers,....)
And much more.
Backups:
Play any game you want. Though i do not support piracy.
VLC for psp:
Play any video format on your psp, no more converting :)
Emulators:
Play Gameboy, Snes, N64, PSX, .... on your psp.

There are probably more things you can do but i'm not gonna say everything.

4. If you use a pandora battery. the risk of bricking is gone. well it isnt but you can easiely fix it.
and still. bricking chance is only 2-3 % if you do it right.
I have downgraded like 15 psps and not bricked any.
Well i do have semi-bricked my own psp by messing with the Flash-0

Hope i've helped :)

yeah once you downgrade just check out the easy installers... you get all the benefits of the newest sony firmwares plus you can use homebrew... hell its worth hacking the psp for the youtube player alone... not to mention a couple of 2 gig memory sticks = hours of entertainment...

Is there a good site to get started on all this?
I don't want to use a forum because things can change, and the posts can be outdated.

First check out what firmware you have in system settings :)

You will be needing a pandora battery to downgrade your psp.

i dropped my psp in a swimming pool and now it won't play games or movies on it anymore. Gay. Someone told me it could just be the memory card but if I took out the memory card shouldn't the movie at least play?
