We got the original UP 3D printer almost a year back, its been a wonderful device that has helped us a lot but without its auto level feature it made it a bit hard to us to use for repeat printing of the same part if we wanted to get an exact consistency between parts, which is why our side held back from releasing the custom cup project for our HM5 headphones, then came the UP 2.

The UP Plus 2 arrive early November and its been printing ever since, here is a unboxing and mini review of the UP Plus 2 3D printer:

Ah the box, they actually put some thought into the entire packing for the UP 2, on the original UP it was just a plain brown box.

Time to open it, lots of goodies inside, well packed, lots of foam to cushion the printer and parts.

and here she is, totally unpacked, what a beaut with some assembly required. If you also look closely to the back of the print bed, in the middle there is a small metal square, that is part of the sensor that helps the nozzle detect the height of the print bed, part of the auto leveling feature.

Here is a shot of another auto level add on, its a little device that you stick onto the nozzle, its held in place by magnets, a wire connects it to the control board on the printer. The printer moves the bed and printer head to different areas and the attachment helps to detect the printing beds max height in relation to the printer nozzle at different points of the bed.

This combined with the nozzle height detection is done automatically and no manual adjustments are needed for printer calibration. So far the autolevel feature has resulted in perfect prints and each print of the same part is a exact copy. On the original UP the calibration had to be done manually be a person using their eye for judgement, as expected left a lot of room for errors and inconsistency between prints.

Final thoughts: The UP, be it the 1 or 2, are fantastic machines, very good price/performance ratio and very reliable, many of the problems i found with printing on the UP 1 came from calibrating, in fact many UP users always said your print quality is only as good as how well you manual calibrate the UP 1, with the UP 2 the human factor is removed and almost every print comes out well.

The UP 2 build is a lot nicer, its not a big difference but the few changes are noticeable, its better styled, also i think they are using a better step motor, its at least a lot more quiet and the bed and printer head seem to move smoother.

Print quality is the same in the 2 except the autolevel makes getting a good print a heck of a lot easier.

We're now using this UP 2 for our custom 3D print HM5 headphone cups, as we release more custom printed products i'll probably be looking to get even more of these gems.

Quite a few, has kept the printer quite busy. I think it'll be even more popular after we have offer a black color variant in Jan, just waiting for black PLA print material to arrive.

Indeed. We're working on a few other designs for HM5 cups and also on a hybrid kit which would mash the HM5 with another popular planar headphone driver ;)
