The project is back in full motion, there are some additional pictures flying around FB and Chinese audiophile sites, all of which make the X3 look like a nice bit of kit, but i kind of feel the T51/SFLO2 had better hardware.

thanks for the update - been along time coming has this player - hope it goes well for them,
im not following this but is it an "audiophile" enthusiast thing or a more general player with some FiiO nods to hi-end quality audio - guess im just wondering, as im sure many are, if there is a market beyond the FiiO curious?? - will be interesting to watch

:) - you know me too well - but lets hope one does not have to jump through hoops to get it to show up - still wondering if there is a big enough market for FiiO on this - amps yes as many phones still dont have the power to fuel beats like the HM5 etc etc - well we will wait and see

Fiio's release schedule for the X3 seems to show they have pretty modest expectations....a few hundred to start, a thousand+ later, five thousand or so in July (if I remember the details correctly). It's a $200 player with a Fiio pedigree, which will certainly go over well with the Head-fi crowd accustomed to dropping about the same or a bit more on a Cowon or an absurd amount more on some overpriced brick from one of the boutique Chinese audiophile brands.

It probably won't do much to sway the skeptics (as epitomized by a lot of the folks on Anything But iPod) who feel a Clip+ will do just as good a job for a fraction of the price. Or the aforementioned Cowon with their huge range of adjustments and audio enhancements.

Just looking at their interface and some other details, i think the method by which the album art is pulled is similar to the old rockchip media players....can't really remember now if that was a bad thing or now.

It will probably sell well unless some theres some major flaw or the reviews are negative (which i don't think it will be). I personally think these 'audiophile' daps are a bit overpriced and you can find many good daps that output very good quality audio which are priced quite cheap. I've personally found having a good portable amp paired with a dap like the clip+ or a ipod touch provide very, very good SQ.

My ideal dream of a player right now would be a smartphone with a wolfson chip and a amp chip, DONE, good sound and i don't need to carry a second device for listening to music in my pocket.

hahaha, i wrote that and totally forgot to mention the one factor that will affect someones portable rigs sound quality are their earphones, a good pair of earphones can make even a plain jane dap sound wundaba.

yeah, i saw they were drip feeding strocks, but development has been on the go for a few years now and i assume a good few pennies spent, is there a big enough market beyond those that collect and "are into" audio hardware? as for the cowon and + crew on ABI lol - its all part of the game i suppose, things just cant be popular if their aint a web battle going on. Audio hardware enthusiasts collectors or hobbyists, their passion is on new and different ways to produce and listen to sound - its all good and they love it and will always look for new stuff, there is no end to it, but its is a select and specialists group and maybe FiiO have let themselves be lead a little down a possible wrong (but right in many ways) path???? - either way i wanna see it as its almost retro :)

i see that the original X3 thread has burst a blood vessel and went all nasty - man what a place the web is :)

I think there will always be a big enough market to sell devices like the X3, there are enough people who want that next audiophile fix and those who just like lot of gadgets. I expect we'll see a lot of people buying it on our site once it is available in mass.

The just-announced Vivo Xplay goes a (big) step further by cramming in a bunch of desktop-class components: Cirrus Logic DAC, Cirrus Logic asynchronous receiver, and TI op-amp.

FiiO will be fine; given the niche, I would think they're simply shooting to recoup their investment plus a small profit. Then again, they're also confident enough to have announced the X5. :)
