Well, it appears that my wife or grand daughter may have accidentally bumped my player while charging. It's extremely sensitive. The reason it wouldn't boot, is simply because it was dead. Still doesn't address the speaker not working though.

Gonna have to re-root, and all that fun stuff, but no, apparently the speaker is hardware related. Not sure how it happened, when it's only been sitting there.

I'll recommend you reflash the other rom and see if it works. I've read somewhere, some rom could caused some part like speakers, volume..etc don't work.

But why would it work before? I have that experimental ROM donaldson at SlateDroid cooked up. Has always worked well for me.

Just took it apart, and the wires are securely attached. Not sure what the problem is. It's probably just some dumb setting I'm missing, but, if it is, I sure don't see it.

Another side note. I notice even with the earphones, even though it works, it doesn't go up as loud as it should. I have an external speaker hooked up to it, volume all the way up, and I can barely hear it. Perhaps the ROM did become corrupt somehow. Maybe I'll flash a new ROM.
