Do Matt. It's a fun project, and not really as hard as you'd think, iffin that is, you find a good tutorial.

Nice stuff TWP! Keep at it!

I'd love to get into whittling properly. I attempted to whittle a tamper for my pipe. I Did alright...for thinning a simple cylinder of wood.. -_-...
Thanks Alex. I remember whittling sticks as a kid. This is my first carving though. My hands are actually sore from doing it. I spent 3-4 hours straight on it, and without the proper knife.

Really nice carving even for a first time. It sort of reminds me of treebeard from LOTR.

How long did it take you to do?

Thanks razzer. I didn't really time it, but around 3-4 hours. If I would have had the proper tools, and softer wood, it probably would have cut the time in half.

Well for not having the right tools and using the wrong wood you seem to have done a good job, hope you post more of your wood carvings as you do them.

I sure will. The knife I used, a little Becker BK13 Remora, looks like this:

Wood carving knives have short blades, for better control, like this:

Looks great IMHO for the 1st try.
I'm wondering if the 1st one looks like this, the 10th one should be outstanding :)

Nice TWP. Reminds me of a totem pole.
