Maybe someone else at the exhibition snapped better pics and will hopefully post them online somewhere.

Just saw this on the mp4nation blog, looks like an interesting product from FiiO, and I like the idea that there is no internal memory thereby keeping the cost down, but I'm not sure if I like the front buttons, they don't seem that intuitive. Having said that, I'm eagerly waiting for its release and for the reviews to show up.

Yup, it's getting slimmer (however taller) but will have a bigger battery.

It is a good way to cut costs by not having internal memory but I do know that many customers prefer having internal memory, I hope the lack of internal memory doesn't turn people off it.

I, for one, prefer this approach--flash memory is so inexpensive and ubiquitous these days. I like being able to store my music on a removable chip and move it to another platform as my location/situation changes. So long as there is not an arbitrary limit as to how much flash memory the unit can access, or proprietary storage folder/format schemes I am happy with this!

exactly - this is now how i use devices, especially with so many to mess with, phones, tablets, diff players etc etc - its just so much more convenient to slot in my 16GB card and have all my music (well enough) accessible on any device i want

Just read this whole thread. I'll be interested to see how well this sells when it comes out. It looks like it's basically being designed by committee with James just taking requests from Head-Fi. I wonder how many of the features that people who are interested in portable players (gapless, replaygain support, line out, long battery life, BBE etc..) will actually get them sales outside of the enthusiasts market.

For the Man-On-The-Street I suspect it'll come down to price and UI, much like any other purchase, with few people noticing all the extra features that the Head-Fi people have asked for.

So March is the tentative release date for the X3, are MP4Nation thinking of bringing in the X3 to their store?

When the Fiio E9 first came to be sold at online stores mp4nation wasn't that far behind. So I'm pretty sure they will have stock either when it's released or at least have a pre-order setup.
