Well today was the first day of the Electronic expo, i had the chance to play around with a lot of RK2818/RK2816 devices. Mad you are spot on, the RK2816 is, as the manufacturers put it, 'the solution with no wifi' whereas RK2818 is for wifi.

I wonder if the RK2816 devices can be used with compatible 3G or Wired Ethernet dongles. It'd be interesting if the only difference is really just the wifi unit or if the actual RK2816 chip lacks networking functionality.

PMP makers are already dependent on "solutions" from very few companies; the widespread adoption of Android would move the whole industry ever closer to homogenization. It's pretty close now, but at least there's still the illusion of variety.

Yeah definitely agree that android is a far better solution than any proprietary OS most Chinese companies can come up with. However the main issues I have with using android as a Pmp OS is the fact that IMO we have yet to see any really strong playback apps avilable from the store.

Unless companies specially tailor media playback apps for android as the likes of like archos/samsung have done on their Android devices you are going to be hard pressed to find a complete app that can handle multiple video formats well and audio well while also offering advanced features like customizable EQ and sound enhancement.

Every time I see a new media playback app on android I download it for my phone to test. Most are not that great, a couple have EQ's but are let down by weak navigation or weak looking interfaces, weak features etc none of them have nailed it yet IMO. Also I don't think these video playback apps from the store use gpu accelerated video decoding so video playback is generally not great on them unless you have a very strong cpu.

On both my android phones the stock player can handle higher resolution video much smoother than any of the players from the store.

Fortunately these companies might have access to tailored playback apps such as the rock chip stock media apps which will not be perfect but particularly for video will probably be better than android store apps.

How is the videolan app for android?

Well I heard someone was porting it but it is not available yet to my knowledge. There is a VLC app in the store but it's only for remote playback not normal playback of file types directly on the device. Android really needs a solid media playback app.

sere, your comments on the media player etc available in Android are true, and kind of blows my theories out of the water, i have tried all the music apps on android, well loads anyway, none shine out, individual features do, put them all together and we may have something, anyway, i have only used them on the apad and all of them are crap on there, to the point most will now not load after updating, most slow the apad down when music is playing, scrolling is an issue and al will crash

realplayer has an app as well, and as ever its intrusive - no matter how many times i closed it, somehow i kept seeing FC linking to real player - what is it with those guys, none of the other apps ever appear when i have closed them but REAL just ... well, is just crap
