just have read this on carrypad about android vs apple and think it fits quite well
quote;
"We used to jokingly call the iPad a large iPhone but the application store has given it differentiation. In the Android world, that differentiation option hasn’t even been enabled yet. Android tablets with the application store really are large phones and until Android is enhanced and Google widens the doors to the market (and possibly creates a large-format application suite) the solution has a limited future and doesn’t offer an alternative to the iPad."
http://carrypad.com/2010/09/24/why-ther ... ternative/

But I´m sure there will be more android apps for larger screens in near future ....hopefully ;)

Yes at the moment that is probably true, but once 3.0 comes out things should start to change.

Here's what 3.0 will bring:
1. Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping in November/December – for the Holiday Season.

2. Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher. (We all, of course, heard that Android handsets with 2GHz CPU’s are coming)

3. New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher. (Anyone thinking about Android tablets now? )
Completely revamped user interface. If you want to get a feeling of what Android 3.0 Gingerbread UX is like, check out the Gallery App on Nexus One. The same overall feel, light animated transitions, etc. Natively, through all the UI.

4. Android’s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2

The most interesting point is point 4. Which should address the issue you raised.

Viper--this info is old. I'll update. First off, Gingbread is officially Android 2.5, not 3.0. Presumably, the 3.0 designation will be used for Honeycomb.

Here's what 3.0 will bring:
1. Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping in November/December – for the Holiday Season.

possibly--no firm launch date has been announded

2. Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher. (We all, of course, heard that Android handsets with 2GHz CPU’s are coming)

These are the recommended specs to run 3.0 smoothly...not a hardware requirement

Google does not recognize an official split of OS for tablets and phones. Officially, it is google's position that android is not intended for tablets at all

Regarding the Archos 70 (250GB), I like the new archos tablet and I would be open to trying it out for the right price. The 250gb archos 70, however, isn't where I would start. The nice thing about tablets is battery life. No doubt a 250gb HDD will suck power and add heat. Neither of these are good things for a tablet. I would go for the 8gb version and add a 16 or 32gb sd card. That should be more than enough for portable use.

Well if 3.0 wont run smoothly on devices with specs below the minimum required/suggested then there will be little point in them being updated to 3.0. So surely there will be have to be a split.

As for the Archos 70, I did look at the 8GB first, but it's £229.99. So for only £40 more your getting a whopping 242GB extra :!: I don't think that's that bad a trade off to lose a bit of battery life. But i guess it's down to personal preference.

The Archos 70/101 have 256MB DDR3 Ram, which is below the 512 min recommended by google for Gingerbread. This could be a limitation although I doubt. Most boards (including the Tegra 2) are using DDR2 memory, which is significantly slower. I would guess take a chance that 256MB of DDR3 memory (because of its' speed) will allow the archos 70/101 to run gingerbread.

who does conceive these silly names for android versions and do they mean something? :D
The HD-version of the Archos will be much more bulky than the flash one
and I wonder if only the 8GB will have micro-sd (like on the forerunner 5IT).
Too bad they leave out the hd-cam from the A43.
...btw: the devices are a little cheaper here in germany (€249/299 incl. shipping) - can´t belive it

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is supposed to be able to update from Android 2.2 to Android 3 sometime next year. If they ever release the Tab in the states anyway... I would really like to see pricing for the Tab in the states
