Does anyone know if any of the new breed of dual-SIM, touch screen Chinese cell phones or iphone clones work on the 3 Network in the UK?

Thanks Raz, but another post http://www.mp4nation.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=2481 said that these phones only work on a 900/1800/1900 Mhz band.

According to http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml , 3 in the UK operate on a 2100 Mhz band.

Obviously, I don't want to fork out a lot of hard-earned cash for a phone of no use to me, so could this please be clarified?

Thanks.

if that site i posted states that its a 2100mhz signal for your provider in your area, these phones will NOT work for you.

just because its a GSM service, doesnt mean all GSM providers use the same signal.

the 2100mHz band is what is used for 3G phones (broadband mobile devices), the phones we have, which are triband are 2G, they will still work on the 3 network, however for your own verification you should just call or visit your nearest 3 store and ask them.

Sorry Raz, maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick, but your message sort of contradicts itself. How could 3 (2100 3G) work if phones that only are 2G?

i think what he is saying is that all of the phones in the UK are not 3g compatible so there must be something setup that allows the 3g network to be backwards compliant.

sort of like USB 2.0 and 1.0

you can plug in a 1.0 device in a 2.0 port and vice versa and it works.

Actually i am wrong, spoke to a friend that lives in the UK, they said that sometime last year 3 went totally 3G, although you can use 2G phones that are dual or triband, after a few inward calls you will get text messages from 3, telling you to upgrade your phone and if you don't your service will be stopped. So apparantly if you don't upgrade to a 3G phone, they deactivate your phone account till you do.

So NO, the phones we have won't work on 3 UK as they are a total 3G network now. Sorry my info was out of date. I thought 3 UK was the same as 3 Hong Kong, where all the new contracts you sign up for are all 3G plans, but you can still buy and use 2G (dual/triband) phones without problem.

Thanks for clearing that up Raz. A shame as I was very interested in buying one.

Do you know if this is also likely to apply to the Meizu M8? I am interested in that too but I don't want to get my hopes up!
