Well, it's all in the title.
There already are a few 1024x600 seven inches tablets on the market, but they're dedicated PMP, so I was wondering if Android-powered variants were around the corner...

Thanks!

Yes I've noticed the 8.9-to-10 inches tablets, but I'm looking for something more compact that could also be used as a ebook reader (where the higher res could be put to good use).
Hopefully some half-decent WVGA tablets will be released by October, so that I can pick one up by myself when I'm in HK.

TBH the benefits of a high res like 1028x600 are lost on a screen size of 7", there isn't that much noticeable difference between a 800x480 res screen and a 1028x600 res screen at that size, its more noticeable on 8.9" and higher, but then again i can see where the slight benefit of the 1028x600 screen on a 7" form factor may help for ereading.

The main advantage 1024x600 has over 800x480 on any screen size is you can fit the whole width of most standard web pages on in one go without having to scroll width ways. To be honest while the ipad may not be true wide screen having the extra 168 pixels on the bottom (1024x76 8) is even better because most websites will fit in fully without more unnecessary added vertical scrolling either, this is where most net books lack IMO. 1366x768 would be amazing though IMO although probably too much on 7 inches. However when you actually see ludicrously high pixel density on devices like the iphone 4 or Sony Vaio P you start to realise just how amazingly sharp and crisp things can look.

I am not sure but the samsung android galaxy tape tablet should have 1024x600 on 7 inches. This is really what I am pinning my hopes on to be the first really strong performing android tablet mainly due the fact the 1.2Ghz Cortex Hummingbird CPU is said to be more powerful than both the apple A4 cpu in the ipad and any of the current 1ghz snapdragon cpu's available.

This is quite true, it didn't really strike me how much a difference that made until i compared how webpages looked on the 7" apad with 800x480 screen to the 8.9" bm999 1024x600 screen.

I didn't see any more replies on this thread. Has anyone seen anyone upcoming 7" Android tablets later this year? I've been using a 7" PMP, not a tablet. But I find that this is wide enought to read regular sized PDFs, so I can see how this would help w/ rendering webpages in a browser. Also this 7" size is surprisingly portable. I don't have a 7" w/ the 800x480 resolution to compare it to, but I think the 1024x600 resolution does help with ereadering. The type fonts are very sharp. It's big, but I can just barely slip it into my shirt pocket. I've looked at the 8.9" units and I think they are too big to carry around easily on the bus or train.

I think almost all 7" tablets and PMPs will max out at the 800x480 resolution, so any that show up w/ the 1024x600 resolution will be rare. I'm not sure if it's worth the extra expense to put a higher resolution screen in a 7" size, instead saving it for 8.9" and 10". However I'd be interested in any 7" tablets that come out w/ a 1024x600 resolution screen.

well I have some bad news i'm afraid...

The latest version of Android - 2.2 Froyo only supports display resolutions up to 854X480, it is rumored that Gingerbread 3.0 will include support for 1024x768 however nothing is for certain at this time although it is highly likely. Its also worth noting even the most recent android market apps also are only optimized for 854x480 displays at most.

This is a real blow as I had high hopes for the upcoming Samsung android Tab and was expecting a 1024x600 display, but now it is almost certain that it will be 854 or 800x480. Not a disaster as the pixel density of 854x480 on 7 inches is actually around the same as the iPads 1024x768 on 10 inches. However the web experience will simply pale in comparison to the iPad, due to the constant vertical and horizontal scrolling which will have to occur.

This is really disappointing and is simply just a shortcoming of the android platform at this time. High res screens on ARM CPU's are not unheard of with the iphone pushing 960x640 on 3.5 inches and some japanese phones running 1024x600. Even atom platform devices like the viliv S5 push 1024x600 on a 4.8 inch screen under XP. It is a software issue....

The only way to get a 1024x600 res tablet at this time is to look for something running another platform like windows/linux etc. I''m not aware of any windows or linux 7 inch tablets as yet though. The floodgates will open soon though, shame we will have to wait until next year probably to see a decent android tablet with a proper screen res.
