The latest firmware for the HDVP2 has seen a few nice new additions, namely the radio and turning off of the video preview over network, but another surprise is the new Subtitles options menu.

Some things i noted
i tested over wifi network (cos i was to lazy to mess with drives) and found that TVersity does not send down any external subs for the HDVP2 to see, even though they are in the same folder, using the included software from Nationite (Intel server) was fine and the server allowed the player to see the 2 sub files that were there (one SRT and one SSA), PS3 media server just kept crashing anyway so i give up on that one in general

Does not work with hard-coded subs as they are rendered as part of the film and not selectable anyway
Does not work with embedded, bitmap based subs, so my MakeMKV rips did not work as they have bitmap subs, and as these types are not actual "text" (they are essentially images) then its obvious i suppose that this new subs interface will not touch them in any way.

Links
IF you wish to see more images of this in action then please click [HERE]
Original firmware download thread -please click HERE

HDVP2 subtitles interface

This allows you to manipulate how text based subs appear on the screen (SRT, SSA etc) by allowing you to select a subs file, change encoding, font size, font color, time offset and subs positioning etc.

To access this new menu you press the OSD button on the remote (to bring up the control bar) and then press # (hash button), you will then see this interface appear:

Image
main interface showing number of subs and selected subs

From here you just need to use the main center button on the remote, use LEFT and RIGHT to swap between each section and UP and DOWN arrow to navigate through each sections available options

Encoding
You can select the type of encoding for the type used in your file, current options are:
  • Default[/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • Unicode(UTF_16LE)[/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • Unicode(UTF_ 8) [/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • Simplified Chinese (GB)[/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • Traditional Chinese (Big5)[/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • Western Languages[/*:m:yet9bsed]

Time Offset
This allows you to slow down or speed up the appearance of the titles just in case the ones you have don't quite match up, you can use up and down button to select + or - values to quite a large degree
Image
Set time offset for subs

Subtitle Color
Does as it says, allows you to select from some pre-set colors so you can always get subs to show up no matter whats playing, options are:
  • Green[/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • Blue[/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • Black[/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • White[/*:m:yet9bsed]
Image
Subtitle color selection

Font Size
Again, no real explanation needed, allows selection of some preset font sizes, from tiny to big, ranges are:
  • 1 - smallest[/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • to[/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • 24 - largest[/*:m:yet9bsed]
Image
Font size selection (showing largest size) - more images on link above

Subtitle position
Simply allows you to move titles up or down the screen, value/options are :
  • 1 - lowest (bottom of screen)[/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • to[/*:m:yet9bsed]
  • 10 - highest[/*:m:yet9bsed]

subtitle positioning - more images on link above

if anyone makes any new tests or anyone with more knowledge then me about subs (as i know squat) can either elaborate or correct me in anything above then please do so, the more info the better

cheers
maderin1

thanks warrior

yep, finally got a LCD TV and boy, compared to conventional CRT TV (and without getting HD channels) image quality sucks, bottom viewing angle is atrocious and i am a little peeved, i thought i had waited long enough for this tech to become better and i must say - not impressed at all - this is with regards to TV and not watching DVD etc

living with it though as i wanted a bigger screen in general, this is 22"

But it makes the HDVP2 look a hell of alot better, there are things on there that i did not even see on the old CRT tv (14") as they tend to chop the picture down but yeah, HDVP2 certainly got a new lease of life on this flast screen

My father in law has a 47" LG. I can't believe the quality picture it has. I took my 4 hour version of "Dances With Wolves" over there to watch, and damn, looked like I could step inside the TV. Really clear.

my sister also has a massive LCD, 50" or something, takes over whole room and its awful, samsung one, but for watching normal broadcasts its simply awful, for DVD or HD maybe yes, but TV no - i cant watch it myself, with screen being so big its easier to see the deficiency in quality of the TV images, it all looks like and over compressed jpeg image - 1 step forward 2 steps back :)

Yes, you are right. His is better for video viewing. I wanted to get a 55", but my room is only 12 wide. Pretty sure I don't need a 55, lol.

Yeah, I know. I hate to fork out $1000 plus for my damn truck. Still better than making payments on a new one, I guess.

Maderin, you are busy again in a good way!
I hope we see these kind of thing also back on the T13FHD plus subs that are centered and a working NTFS OTG!
