There's a report on slatedroid.com about the imminent release of Telechips-based Android tablets: http://www.slatedroid.com/showthread.ph ... -Next-Week.

Does anybody (Raz?) know more about this? It seems that the Telechips processor is a little more powerful. And the devices alledgedly have 256 MB RAM and come with Android 2.1 pre-installed. I'm intrigued. And glad that I've refrained from ordering a Rockchip-based device so far.

in theory this should be alot better than the rockchip and VIA based solution but i assume also there will be a price premium for this

on a side, not keen on the new look slatedroid forum design, find it hard to read

Yeah, I guess the key question is how much of a premium they're gonna command. I'm currently selling some gear to come up with enough reserves for a decent-quality tablet. Was planning on aforementioned Rockchip models, but if Telechip is in the range of an additional 50 Euros, so be it!

And yeah, slatedroid had me confused this morning. Took a while to find the thread I had read last night.. :)

i think at the moment its not the right time to be investing hard earned funds in these as a serious MID, as they are just so new, the various re-branded apads etc i think are really just play things for now, for enthusiasts and experimenters - not to be taken seriously, i fear for the quality of them, i think Android will be fine, its just the hardware - if its the case where you are having to sell stuff to raise cash then i would seriously wait and see for a few months where things go and how these cheap pads pan out

Thing is, I am an enthusiast and experimenter a.k.a. early adopter. :D

It's not like I have to sell my car for this. I've just gone a little overboard as far as headphones and audio/video gadgets are concerned and exhausted my regular "for sh*ts and giggles" budget. Once I've refilled that by offloading some of my IEMs (Cyclones, anyone?), I'd have enough for one of the generic Android tablets.

I think the current generation of devices would totally suffice as a cheap couch surfing device, which is what I'm aiming for. And it's an affordable option to experiment with Android. Even more so, if the Telechips devices really come with 2.1..

good, as this is where i am - i think these are good value for money for what they can do, and as long as we all know what they are about then they can be enjoyable devices, i mean come on, a 7" wifi Android tablet for 100 - 160 - how can we pass that up :) - at least its something interesting happening as i have had it with media players now, the manufacturers have killed my spirit for them - this at least re-ignites the flames :)

well-said!

btw, will the new Telechips tablets be sporting the same processor as the SmartQs, or are we talking about a new platform here? I've been eyeing the V5 for months. I might yet get it, if the price drops just a little lower.

i keep forgetting about those, not sure if it will come from the same stable as the SmartQ developments or if its coming as a package from telechips (like rockchip do) and thus could be better implemented - i have never really looked at how well the smartQ devices work as they have always been a little too pricey for my tight-ass-budget

Again, seconded! I'm hoping that all the new devices put some pressure on SmartQ's prices.

The V5 and V7 seem really nice, have a huge community going and 2.1 is already available as a beta. They have dedicated DSP for video too, which means it could be my all-in-one PMP/MID/DAP.

mm .. seems my new account on slatedroid has been deleted and they have swapped AGAIN the site design !!! whet the hell are they playing at - they should do all this in BETA on a sub domain rather then messing in the main site
