Hello Snake Doctor. Keep in mind that although it is possible to stream from an external HD. Powering the HD solely from the mp3 player is not a good idea. Most larger external hard drives with a dedicated power supply which works well because by their nature they require an external power supply. The small portable drives have more issues. on my Ainol my 2.5" hard drive has trouble getting enough voltage to run well. My 1.8" portable hard drive does run... but pretty much kills the battery life on the pmp.

Hi Suppin,

Thanks for the response. I have a 1TB Western Digital external hard drive that has its own power supply. Will this work? I guess I'm just trying to make sense that the USB won't take precedence over the actual power supply that the hard drive uses. I just wanted to be able to take my portable drive with me and the device (most likely the V9000 at this point) and hook it up to a TV anywhere I go. I'd still be using the power supply for the hard drive and if possible the power supply for the PMP.

I looked around briefly and it looks like the V9000HDG 16GB (5.0" screen) only comes in white here. Will mp4nation ever carry a black one?

Why don't you have a look HDVP-2? http://mp4nation.net/catalog/index.php? ... cts_id=386

If you plan to hook it up to a TV anywhere you go. See my review here if you need more info. viewtopic.php?f=68&t=17695

Hello. It should work fine. I'll verify tonight with my 1TB Western Digital Elements External hard drive at home. I'll hook it up to the Ainol and see comes of it. (this is a V8000HDW btw. but it uses the same SC9800 as the V9000HDG so it should be comparable).

Hi Rowwor,

I actually was reading over your review of the HDVP-2 and most likely WILL get that unit in addition to the Ainol. I just wanted to have a portable unit that I could have a sort of.. dual purpose if you will. Right now I don't have the $$ to buy both but if I did I certainly would. I'm still reading over your review of the HDVP-2 but so far it looks perfect for my application.

Currently, for streaming videos over my network I use my PS3. I'm streaming videos from my external hard drive that's connected to my PC. I use this free software called PS3 Media Server (you're probably familiar with it). I don't have any issues with it so far but I'll be getting another smaller TV for the bedroom and I don't want to fork over $300 just to stream my videos over to it. That's where I'd like the HDVP to come in.

For now I'd like to use the Ainol just between two locations. I probably won't use the streaming all that often. I just wanted a PMP for my every day out of the house situations.

I had just posted in your thread about the HDVP-2 last night but thanks for writing that extremely detailed review. I'll probably have a boat load more questions with regards to that hardware as soon as I pick it up. I know originally I had wanted something like the western digital media servers but those are too expensive for what they do (or don't do). I'm definitely looking into the HDVP-2 so I'll be referencing your thread as soon as I get that.

I tried to connect my P&S Canon A700 camera to the V9000HDA through USB OTG (On-The_Go) with no luck. Device does not recognize my A700 camera. I'll try Nikon D70 tonight when I get home from work. But I do know that any PMP will not be able to show photos in RAW format, only the BMP and jpeg formats are acceptable. If you make pictures on your Canon in RAW (Canon .CR2 RAW file format) you will not be able to see them on a pmp even if you will use memory card reader connected to pmp trough USB OTG.

Thanks nmark. I just recently got a larger CF card so I'll probably move to shoot RAW + small jpeg for the sake of double checking my composition on the Ainol if at all possible. It's not a dealbreaker on the device, I just thought it was a neat feature and if it did work that I would definitely use it.

Hello. I have just confirmed that it picked up the hard drive and played video files as well as shown jpeg files. Have I mentioned how much I love this thing?

(BEGIN GUSHING)
I mean it just continually amazes me how well it does things. Hook up a flash card or hard drive and the OTG just works great. It'll play just about every video file I throw at it (except that wierd MSS2 WMV that even Unix and MAC systems find hard to play). It has a fantastic 6 inch screen (just don't look a lower angles). It shows nice legible subtitles (unlike the T13FHD which is either too small for my eyes or the shadows are making it hard for me to read). Lets you resize them. and to top it off it'll do this playing these heavy video files that my Netbook can't even play well... for 8 hours a go before needing to charge.
(END GUSHING)

Did your external HD draw power from the player or have its own power source?

This is a 1TB western digital 3.5inch external hard drive. It does not function without external power even on a full sized computer.

I suspected as such. I wonder if the players will have problems with OTG with an external disk (such as a standard 320g model) that doesn't have its own power source.
