I read that the W7 is coming with version 1.5 of Android...

Does anyone know how the version is decided? AFAIK...Android is open...right? 1.5 is REALLY old...and I thought there were licensing issues or something because most devices don't actually carry the newest version of android. But then I read on Engadget that there is a iPad Clone coming out in a month that has android 2.1. So now I'm confused....why doesn't the W7 just ship with 2.1?

The only reason i could think of is the media chip. But its not like Google rewrites the code for Android at every update.

Can anyone shed light for me regarding this version fragmentation?

It just due to it's battery power and whole design. You can try to run v2.1, but it won run as smooth as v1.5.

It almost seems abitrary on many devices though...top of the line cell phones GET these updates....but all at different times than each other...regardless of performance issues...its actually counter intuitive as well...i feel like that as new versions are made....it should run better since it becomes more optimized...

its crazy...1.5 came out in september and 2.1 came out in october...but phones are just recently getting these updates...the W7 is gonna be totally outdated in a month...even though it already is....at least they are trying

V1.6 is the last official version of Android that is open available for people to download and develop on. Those MID's that are using 2.0 or higher are using versions of Android that was released for a phone. This is why you see PMP and Netbooks still running and coming out on V1.6.

I use 1.6 on my dual boot netbook and 2.1 on my phone, tbh i can't really see to much a difference between the two versions when it comes to app use. I think 2.1 really does improve the phone functionality of Android.

The one nice thing 2.1 would do for a device like the W7, which uses a capacitive touch panel, is the multitouch, but on 9other non capacitive touch screens running android, this main feature of Android 2.1 would not work.
