try this firmware for the player:

When I try to update, I get the following message:

My touchscreen isn't working anymore because of the last firmware update I did. I see the menu (in the player), and the computer recognises the player, but I'm unable to select firmware update in the player.

Also, when I connect the player, I get the following error message in windows:

but I guess that will be over when I upgrade the new firmware, but how can I do this?

Thanks for all the help :)

Pfew, tried a lot of things, but I can't seem to manage to upgrade the firmware on the player.

I can connect the player to my laptop, and it recognises it, see the following screen:

But whenever I try to update with consumer update it says no usb device found. Then I tried to update the rockchip mp4 player with the files that came along with consumer electronics (rockusb driver) I get the message that the file doesn't contain a new driver for my device...

Any tips?

I also tried to hold the menu button while the player is switched off. Then connected the usb cable, still the player hasn't reached the rockchip mode (as I understand necessary for upgrading firmware).

So on the forum I have read that the only way is to connect it the hard way. That is open up player and slide round the chip to make it connect through windows right?

So I opened up the player according to the pdf file I found on this site. If I understand correctly I have to move some metallic thing to the left and the right (of the red circle) after I plug it into the usb right?

You can short either the Hynix memory chip or the EtronTech chip.

I would recommend you try shorting the EtronTech chip with small metal tweezers CAREFULLY as it is more successful to get it into firmware upgrade (shown as "rockusb") mode.

I strongly recommend to try using this VX858LE clone firmware (download here: http://www.mediafire.com/?2n1gnqiy3xg) to update your VX858LE clone after you get it into firmware upgrade mode.

Your MP4 player is a VX858LE clone.

If your VX858LE clone still has only 2GB of internal memory then I guess one of the memory chips failed (they use two 2GB memory chips in the 4GB VX858LE clone) and you'll have to either refund or exchange your VX858LE clone to the original supplier if possible. Your memory problem makes your VX858LE clone look like the first reported hacked Rockchip-based MP4 player, with 2GB of usable internal memory instead of the advertised 4GB of internal memory.

aggg, i really wish you hadn't opened it...

basically you need to reset the flash memory so that it goes into firmware mode, i normally do this by running a metal pin up and down the legs of the chip till my computer recognizes the drives as a Rock USB and not mass storage device. Once your computer detects it as Rock USB, load the firmware i gave you. This should set your player back to working.

Now as long as you have your player open, can you take a better quality picture of the circuit board, just lift the battery and take a picture of the entire board and if you can take another high res pic of the chips labeled either hynix or samsung. I just spent about an 1hr going through our VX858LE clone stock to make sure we didn't get any hacked players, all seem to be fine, but it would ease my mind if i could verify that your player had 4gb of physical memory.

This is the best I can do with my cam, other pictures are more blurry...

The text on the Hynix chip is:
HY27UU08AG5M
TPCB 748A

The Etrontech one states:
EM636165TS-6
G100205RCT775 1BV
