I'm in the market for a couple of PMPs to occupy my young children on long (>12 hour) flights. So a key priority is obviously battery life - at least 6 hrs would be ideal. Other priorities are:
- Can play a variety of video formats (XviD avis, VOB, preferably MP4 and FLV files downloaded from Youtube) without conversion - up to 720p
- Loud enough to be heard over airplane noise
- Minimum 4.3" screen
- Good viewing angles are preferable
- Reasonable build quality to withstand rough handling by kids
- USB charging preferable
- HDMI out would be a bonus

Everything else - touchscreen vs. buttons, 1080p support, non-video related features, etc. - is secondary.

I've tried to do research but am feeling a bit overwhelmed. The Ainol V8000HDW appears to have staggering battery life but their players don't seem to generate much positive buzz on these forums. The Teclast C510HD looks like a decent overall candidate. Can't find any info on battery life for the Onda VI20 but I hear it has good screen and video support. Any suggestions?

for 12hrs....none. Players that do the high resolution playback need a lot of power, even when playing lower resolution files, the chips consume quite a lot of the battery power. You will probably find the max playback time to vary between 4 - 6hrs on any 730p video player.

My best suggestion would be to get an external power charger to work with these devices if you must have it last 12hrs.

I realise that I'll never get 12 hrs out of any of these - just hoping for as much as possible - near the top end of that 4-6 hr range would be pretty good. (I have a couple of Cowon D2s which can get around 10 hrs of video playback, but the screen is way too small to watch for that long!)

I have been looking for basically the same thing. After significant research, I decided to go with the Ainol V8000HDW. It has a nice LARGE 6'' 800x480 resolution screen and uses the latest SoChip 9800, which is a power and efficient chip (comparable to the TCC8901, but uses less power). It also comes with a 3000maH lithium ion battery which is currently the largest in a pmp today. According to tests done on imp3.com, it is able to handle a loop of madagascar in divx for close to 10 hours and can play 1080p file on a loop for over 7 hours. If you need longer, you can get an external 4400 mah battery with a usb charger (around $50 on Amazon). The combination should get you over 20 hours of hd viewing.

The OS-72HR has a great screen and good for AVI playback, it doesn't have HDMI but it does have TV out, this would probably get you about 4hrs of video playback, but with lower resolution files you could stretch it to 5/6hrs. The speaker isn't that loud, but nor are most other players, i would suggest buying a Fiio Walkbox, it isn't large, easy to carry around and is loud.

My other suggestions would be the RAmos T17FHD or the T11TE.

If you are in no rush to get a player. i would also suggest the Onda Vi20, which we will have soon.

Would be keen to hear your thoughts on the V8000HDW when it arrives, set2374... and also any info on battery life for Vi200. The external battery idea is worthy, too - Raz, in your experience can most (all?) of these players be used (i.e. to watch videos) while they are charging via USB?

I ordered it on the 3/29 and I am still waiting for it to arrive. I was starting to have a little buyers remorse because I didn't go for the T11TE, but I just saw a demo of v8000hdw on youtube and I was really impressed. The viewing angles look terrific--the screen looks good even when viewed from the bottom in the demo. The same person did a demo on the T11TE and there definitely was noticeble color inversion if you're not watching head on. I have no concerns with batterlife on the v8000hdw--every report makes it out to be marathon runner. This makes loads of sense because it's using a very efficient SoChip (which puts all of the functions on a single chip--as opposed to using a separate audio DAC, you save a lot of power. I have been told the screen is also LED backlit (not TFT) which saves energy. Couple solid power management with a 3000mah battery and there is no reason you shouldn't be getting 6+ hours of video. I am excited again. :)

Many thanks for the advice fellas, our trip is rapidly approaching so I think I will go ahead and accept all of your recommendations - a V8000HDW or two, an OS72HR or two, and some battery backup. Between those, our Cowon D2s, a netbook, and the kids' Nintendo DS Lites, hopefully we'll be okay! Do you think I'm just using this trip as an excuse to indulge my gadget-buying habit? :)
