The HDVP-1 does not support DTS.

thanks for the quick response, any passthrough ability being implemented in any future firmware? video reviewer said they were hopeful that it may be included at a later date.

It's a gamble playing the "Firmware Guessing Game (tm)". I always just assume that nothing is going to get changed and the product now is the way it always will be.

I spent a long time looking at both the WDTV and the HDVP-1. I was lucky enough that my friend purchased a WDTV Live during my decision making process. After some fiddling and seeing how buggy and crashy the firmware was I opted for the HDVP-1.

It has a few bugs of it's own; it can only display in a ratio of 16:9 or 4:3, so if you have a movie in 2.35:1 that has been encoded without the black bars it's going to look stretched. But that's easily solved by encoding and keeping the black bars. Some people have a hard time reading the subtitles because they're a solid block of colour and have no outline, but that's been fine for me.

The format support is amazing, which really is the whole point of these players, everything I throw at it works without any issues. I think for the money there really is nothing better.

could always just remux any dts streams to ac3 and add them to the video/audio streams.doesnt take long and if i really need the dts audio, just use my wd hd tv setup that is downstairs.
hmmmmm.....decisions decisions.
be nice to try out another hd device too. like u said, guessing game about dts passthrough support in future firmware upgrades but u never know.
current firmware on normal wd hd tv is top notch, i bought one pretty much when it 1st came out and to say it was little buggy is an understatement. gone thro loads of different firmware but the last few have been top notch.
only found out a few months ago that my x-fi gamer soundcard will do dd5.1/dts and u have to have to pay to get the license.
doesnt run smoothly either and find myself using spdif passthrough anyway. what a waste of £5(-ish) that was.

Agree. That is the reason I got mine. Few bugs is not the biggie for me. I can live with that.

The HDVP-1 won't ever support DTS due to licensing.

passthrough isn't licensing tho, unless they closed the " passthrough loophole ", if there is such a thing ;)

maybe thats why the sumvision cyclone v2 and wd hd tv live players had to buy the licence and include it in their latest models.

anybody know for certain?
