The other thing I notice is that the player memory is actually 7484 MB instead of even 8000 MB (actually 9192 MB). Is this normal?

Yes pritty normal and don't forget some space is for the firmware, space that don't end up as being seen memory.

Also, the player had an autorun.inf file when I bought it, so I formatted it, since it had a virus. I lost the games though. Can anyone tell me which games can I download for the 990? If someone of you can suggest some games that need high concentration, that would be nice. I don't want fighting or arcade games, just some simple ones to exercise the memory.

As it can play all those old games like games from the GBA and such, you can search for these files. I wouldn't recommend this on the 990 anyway, as the button lay-out isn't exactly made for gaming....

All right, games aren't important anyway. I have a few more questions, though:

1. The JXD 990 manual has a mention about a CD in the contents list but there was no CD in the box. If I'm missing the software provided on the CD, can I download it from somewhere?

2. When connecting to the computer, the player says "USB is connecting ..." and that message remains as it is. Is it just a grammatical mistake or is it waiting to connect and show something? Needs some software etc?

3. I see two USB drives listed in my computer, when the player is connected. One drive is inaccessible. What is it and how to access it? In the System Information, it says:
Version: 68.65.10.15
Descript: 990_935A_1014

4. How do I update the firmware and what's the latest firmware for JXD 990?
What video and audio formats take the smallest space and have a decent quality too?

5. I'm a little disappointed with the battery life, since I was able to play less than 2 hours of video and some audio.

Thank you for all the help.
Regards,
RS

1. The mentioned disc probably is the one with the update tool and usb driver. But discs are not be given anymore these days as you don't need them in most cases and otherwise can download from the web.

2. If your player can be accesst, the connection has been made. Don't pay attention to this message then :)

3. It's logical only one drive is only visable. Your player has a (micro ?) sd slot, if that doesn't contain any card, you can't open the drive

4. How to update can be found here in the first post, download the manual and go to the last chapter: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=13607&start=0
Still watch out with updating, there has been some trouble with newer players and incorrect firmware on the JXD site. You also probably have the newest firware. If it's dated at the end of july 2009 or newer, don't update. You have the newest version anyways.

About video, try to decode at the screen resolution and go for AVI in divx decoding. Xvid gives sync problems when scrolling to the file or bookmarking. Also be ware that your files don't contain one or a few missing or faulty frames (direct internet downloads have these issues some times, decoding yourself is because of that the option and will work also for the downloaded files), if so the players stops playing the video and goes on to the next.

5. Can't say anything about this, my JXD300 gives you about 3 hours, so not that long either.....

Thank you for the replies again, Mr. Dj M!

I do not turn the speakers off, in the settings menu, and use the earphones. But plugging in the earphones, stops the sound from the speakers. The speaker icon, however, can still be seen on the screen. Is it still taking the power?

You're welcome.
About the speaker thing, I assume it is not. Check if you still hear some noise coming out

Yes, I charge it until the red LED on the charger changes to green. I still keep it in that state for about an hour, sometimes. Still same battery time. I'm thinking to make a DIY, external Ni-Mh charger meant for ipods. That would be a great help. I'm talking about mintyboost

The mintyboost kit is about 20 USD and even beginners can make it according to the website:

This project is suitable for beginners, some soldering tools are necessary but even if you've never soldered before it should be pretty easy. You can etch a circuitboard and/or breadboard this up, or simply buy a kit from the webshop.

I think it would be able to recharge the all JXDs for at least 3 hours of video, with 2 rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, more with 4. I'll be able to make one with 4 batteries, just need a bigger enclosure. I'll probably use a cassette box. This is great for people who travel.

RS
