I'm looking for a cheaper GSM phone because my CDMA provider, Telus, is finally switching over to GSM next month. Looking not to spend more than about $160.

Anyone offer any good alternatives to the Sciphone G2? Because it's not real Android (how ironic, mimicing a free OS). I might settle for it simply because of the price.

But I was also looking at the G19 through G21 of the Sciphone series. They are priced a bit steep for Chinese phones but apparently run true Android. They also look decent (besides the G19 which looks like a BB Storm which I positively hate)

Barring Android I'm also looking at something called a Diamond J6 (HTC Diamond clone) which apparently runs WinMo. If I get that I'm definitely getting PointUI (as long as its compatible)

Also Raz when are you selling the G2? If I end up buying it I'd rather buy it from you.

Only the latest two Sciphones that state they use Android are actual Android phones, all the other ones run a fake Android (its the same OS as other CECT phones, just made to look like Android).

Raz, I think in fact you're right. I sent them an alibaba note asking about their range of phones concerning Android, and they only mentioned the N19 and N21.

Looks like I'll be getting an N21. For anyone else interested, the N21 is actually a debranded version of General Mobile's DSTL1, it's quite a gorgeous piece of work. General's products are available over Amazon and Buy so I trust this phone more than I trust your run of the mill Sciphone haha. And it does run true Android.

honestly do not get these Android sciphones, Android OS is still in development and it easier to belive that sciphone won't release newer versions of Android to run on their phones.

Before, Sciphone released a G2 which had a fake version of Android (ironically, a free OS)
The N21 however runs true Android - it's a debranded version of the General Mobile DSTL1.

Also, @Raz, Sciphone might not have end user updates... But General Mobile does :P

it runs android at its core, but each manufacturer will tailor it differently for their own phones - ie optimize it to run on the processor they are using, fix it to run nicely with the screen resolution present in their phone etc.
the android that runs on an HTC phone wont run on another phone - however most apps developed for android should run on all phones that run android. some apps might need recompiling first.

what raz is rightly saying is that sciphone are unlikely to release many (any?) updates to fix bugs and add new features to their android phones, whereas HTC certainly will.

Go for the real ones HTC Samsung Nokia SE Motorolla etc. If you can´t afford a new one go for a slightly used one. The HTC Diamonds are realy cheap when bought used. The HTC Diamond have a wery strong support by different user forums and it´s having a much stronger CPU than the clones !
