New to the world of MP4 players. Used the excellent info on this website to choose and order (from ebay) an Onda Vx797HD.

It is very impressive! Could really do with a case and stand as it is heavy and rather large and sleek.

Decided to upgrade firmware from here;

http://translate.google.com/translate?h ... ID%3D13760

This contains;

Drivers for the vx797 (in CHINA CHIP USB LOADER mode)
Software writing tool
New (v2.0 firmware)

You need to use the burning tool which comes with the same download, and you need to hold down some of the buttons on the player before you plug in USB to computer. This puts the player into a bootload device mode, whereby windows recognises it as a different device and tries to install drivers. These are in the package you just downloaded.

When the player is connected in bootloader mode - you can start the software writing tool.

You need to point the first 3 buttons to to the appropriate files from the download, and click the bottom of the two large buttons on the left button to go.

You will get a message to say "burning" on the software tool and on your player. This seemed to hang for ages so after 10 mins just unplugged it and it re-booted fine with new firmware.

Did not work with Vista and so had to reset and use XP.

The new firmware allows "games" which also allows you to run applications like the pdf reader. I can confirm this is working well and tried it with "Angels and Demons". Be patient takes 3mins to load.

See this thread for download site and more info;

Hope this helps someone else. I am glad I upgraded the firmare although i had a few anxious moments after incorrectly flashing with Windows Vista and thought i had ruined the player. I found excellent advice on the forum, but basically just needed to reset, and keep trying to get to link to windows in bootloader mode. If you have problems you might have to delete any devices from windows device manager, and restart windows.

Welcome Aurrian, and about the burning tool you don't really need it. Upgrading on the player works also fine (hold de "-" key while you turn the player on, then it's updating). :wink:

That almost sounds like an broken player! but how do yo mean by I can't get it out of the USB mode? If it's updating then it hasn't any pc connection if you do it the way I discribed. Otherwise you can not even get it updating!

the only thing i can get it to do is when i press the power button and the reset key with it plugged in to the usb and the boot loader runing is it will say chinachip.cn and under that firmware upgrade on the player the boot loader has 4 things that it displays and the only things that i can read say cpu sometimes it says chinachip pmp boot or something like that in the hardware manager but that is about it i have tried everything if i hold the volume - key and press reset it will display firmware upgrade for about 15 seconds and it has a status bar with 0% and then it cuts off i even let it completely die i dont know what else to do

Hello, and excuse my english, i'm french. I received the VX797, and i'm trying to upgrade the firmware. Can you tell me how exactly you do
to run the player in "boot loader mode"? I try the "-" button and plug the usb, i tried the reset button and the power button, nothing work.
And i don't know how to install the usb drivers, if i try manually with the 2.0 Firmware ones, (CN2008USBL.INF) Windows says that there is no information for the device in this file. Please help me i'm desperate.

It works! Thanks! But i don't understand... if it is that easy to upgrade, why the manual says that you have to use a burning software, turn the player in boot loader, etc... and get bored with chinese instructions...?
