well kobashi had a redscreen problem with his (as have several now) and this in itself is a big sign and as we were talking kobashi noticed the player was listed as rockchip in dveice manager, then we found the firmware file and i renamed it to an RKW file and BOOM, i was in and its defibately rockchip

as for modding it, not sure as they seem to have locked it down a bit but not really tried all the tricks yet, i am pretty sure i have one trick thet will open up the partiton for modding

iRiver are big users of chinese chips and also use Actions chipsets in their E range of player, E100 and i am pretty shure also in the E150

SO, technically we might be able to put this onto a OS-81?
It would be very interesting if we were able to do this...

Yeah that is not a bad price for the UK and as per usual with iriver the styling is nice on the P7 although while the ui is better than all chinese devices I am not completely blown away buy it. I just can't see myself ever buying another RK2706 based player with all the new HD capable chips out now, I really can't be bothered to convert standard VGA res xvid and divx anymore, at least with the HD chips it is far less likely you will have to plus they support higher video bit rates.

Also...these days if I was buying a 4.3 inch player I would expect an 800x480 display. Although saying that I still think the display on this would be sharp and certainly adequete. It is a little on the chunky side though. Doesn't suport kinetic scrolling either which is a real shame. As with most RK2706 players I think it would also feel sluggish particularly on picture viewing aswell going on what I have seen in the reviews which can get annoying.

I am actually quite suprised companies like Iriver are being so slow to adobt the new HD chipsets. If the P7 had an RK2708 and they kept a reasonably low price tag it could be a really hot seller. Iriver chat all this junk in their PR campaigns about 'pushing the envelope' and being at the 'forefront of the technological innovation' but they are still pushing RK2706 devices. Really don't undertand why these companies always choose to 'stay in their box' and never try and bring something at least a tiny bit ground breaking to market or take advantage of the shortcomings of companies like apple.
