I've tried like 20 .avi files and 7 work and 13 don't.

Is there any good format that this player will definetly play

Ah, Google is such a wonderful thing: support for H.264 MKV, RM / RMVB, and AVI video.

some test files, the xvid/AVI samples are from full dvdrips from "scene releases" and should work, i never rip/convert myself but every proiper ripped from the net has worked so far on any of my players

unless you know the capabilities of the chipset and what it can decode, you will never know what kind of files _specifically_ it can play, you can convert/rip a video in a billion kind of ways
