I am going to give a more detailed review later, but I wanted to just start this by saying that the display is the best I have ever seen on a PMP or smart phone. All of the viewing angles are good. i commute so I like to watch movies on it since I'm on the bus and train for about two hours. I use DVD Shrink and Handbrake to convert my movies to play on the OS-72HR.

I received my OS-72HR a little more than a week ago and I'm happy w/ it so far. I ordered the 2GB model because I prefer to keep all of my files on a microSD card instead of leaving them on the PMP. I had a PMP die on me corrupting all of my files, so now I keep them all on a card instead of leaving them on the PMP. So I didn't need the 8GB or 16GB. I also like to swap out my cards. I keep one 8GB microSD card w/ just large video files for viewing on the airplane, bus or train.

I live in DC and it only took two weeks for me to get my order. I was worried about my package because it was coming from Hong Kong, but everything seemed to go OK. I was able to get a little tracking information at the Hong Kong post website when the order was shipped. When the package was passed over the the USPS, it was able to get a little more tracking info at the USPS site. It seemed like it took a week for my order to leave Hong Kong for its destination. Then it only took a week for it to get delivered to Washington, DC. I get alot of orders from websites, so I'm OK w/ this deliver time since it was my first order from overseas. The package didn't get lost and it was in pristine condition.

I already own several mp3 players and cell phones for music, so I bought this specifically for the video options. I'm going to try to see if I can get the video out to work. I plan to use my other players for music instead. I haven't been able to find a PMP that has all of the features I like (quality sound, album covers, playlists, video, Bluetooth, size that's easy to carry, good screen, picture viewer, FM recorder, line-in recorder, good battery life, TV out, USB connection, text reader, audio book reader, bookmarks, resume play)

My package came w/ the OTG USB adapter, but I haven't tried to use it yet.

It got the package w/ this OS-72HR (Free Gift - Silicone Case + Mofi Case + Earphone Winder )
I use the silicone case and I think it's great. It's easy to slip on and off and it helps to protect the back of the OS-72HR from scratches. I also got a red Mofi carrying case, but it's just a little too small for me to use. I have to use too much force to get the OS-72HR into it and I'm worried it may break something, so I don't use it. I bought a generic case for a 4.3" GPS system instead. I didn't see a earphone winder but I got an extra Nationite N Stand for MP4 Players. I like the stands. This PMP is a little heavy to use it in the stand though. I get worried it's going to slide off. But if you get the chance, buy one of these. I use it for one of my other PMPs instead. I bought an extra stand for five bucks.

I was going to update my OS72-HR, but it says it already has the current firmware. But I don't see the option for Applications in my menu.

No bother, i only planned to try downloading the txt reader, but the one on this seems OK. I ready ebooks on my Blackberry, so I like having a text reader. My only gripe is it only reads TXT files and there's Widow/Orphan control or word wrapping.
Does anyone know of a way to add word wrap to the text reader?

I was able to format one of my ebooks to the txt file format and open it in the Text reader. I tried to use Rich Text format, but the OS72-HR wouldn't open it. I changed it to Plain Text format and it worked. It opened a huge ebook w/o any problems. The text reader also had bookmarks, so you can go back to a certain page when you reopen your ebook. But it irks me to see the words chopped up on the right side of the screen. The 4.3 inch screen on the OS72-HR is bigger than my Blackberry, so I'm used to reading on a small screen. Also this text reader advance a page at a time instead of a line at at time when you push the button.

I wish I could download Mobipocket reader on this OS72-HR. Most people don't want to read or watch videos on small screens, but I do on a regular basis.

I like using buttons on my PMPs, so i prefer using this instead of a touch screen player. I don't have a problem w/ the button layout on this OS72-HR.

The music player is very basic and it doesn't display album art. I take time to paste album art on all of my MP3 files, so I was disappointed in that. I'm so used to looking at my album covers on my MP3 player.

I downloaded a lot of wallpapers to try to find one i like to use. I found that the red and black wallpaper works best for me like someone noted on another thread. Anything else interfered w/ readying ebooks or the menu screen.

I'll add more to this review later.........

Hi and welcome

nice review so far - glad you like the player
as for word wrap - no, this is a problem on every player i have had im afraid - have you tried the third party text reader??

as for APPS, well what firmware version are you on, it should be there now as you have the latest firmware with OTG as well, there should be an icon on the main menu when you select it it will show nothing yet as you need to add the files for the apps

album art - none, audio is all but neglected, sounds good but organisation and all that for audio is crap

i personally use vidrop to convert vids direct from DVD to AVI(Xvid) - does me good

anyway, enjoy and looking forward to more from you on this player

maderin1 ,
No, i haven't tried the 3rd party text reader yet.

I went into Settings and then About. The version number is V5.3. Is that the most recent update? I think I have the most recent firmware w/ OTG on my player. I've looked thru my menu screen, but I don't see that option. I just wanted to double check before I try updating my firmware on my player.

yes you are up-to-date and you should have an icon for applications, between file browser and music menu - the icons dont really tell you, watch the text as you change - i am sure it should be there

maderin1,

I just realized that I don't have an Applications folder on my PMP. I looked over on the thread about 3rd party apps, and it said that you have to create that folder on the root of the OS-72HR. The firmware is updated, but I think I don't see the icon for applications, between file browser and music menu on the menu because I don't have any the Applications folder on my root. I'll try creating just that folder on my PMP to see if that allows the Applications option to show up on the Menu.

you wont have an applications folder as this is just a folder you create yourself, this is what i did to just keep things tidy - did you see my thread on apps for downloads and instructions

Update to my review.

I wanted to try out the text reader app. so I read the OS-72HR - Games and Applications - Downloads threads about. My player seems like it was shipped w/ the newest firmware, so I didn't to the update step. I downloaded the Systems files (Platform folder) zip and the Text Reader zip. I put the Platform folder in my root. I created an Applications folder like directed on the other thread and put the Text Reader folder and file there. Then I rebooted my OS72-HR and crossed my fingers.

When my PMP came back on, I still don't have the Applications option in the main menu, but it didn't brick on me or freeze up. plugged it back into my laptop and checked it and saw that the files were there in the root of my PMP. So I unplugged it and turned it back on, but the Applications option still wasn't listed. I went to the Browser option and looked and saw the Platform, Applications, and Text Reader folders listed in the correct place. I clicked on the txtreader.cc file and clicked On. This seems to open the application. There's a lot of Chinese letters at the top of the screen and below is the A: drive and B: drive listed. I was able to navigate to the eBook text file I put on my microSD drive and open it up. I am really impressed w/ this Text Reader app. It has a grayish yellow background an much easier to read font. There still isn't any word wrap, but I plan on trying this out to read some old eBooks i have on my laptop.

So it seems that I do have the most recent firmware on my OS72-HR, but I don't get the Applications option on my menu. To access the applications, I have to go thru the Browser option on my menu and open the file that way. This isn't a problem for me. I'd rather do it that way than risk doing something that bricks my player.

This morning I watched Last Holiday on my OS72-HR coming to work. This screen is absolutely amazing to watch movies on. It's a lot better than watching them on my Blackberry or Insignia Pilot. I held it in my hand the entire ride comfortably. This is a little heavier than other PMPs, but that is good because if feels sturdy. I paired this w/ some noise cancelling headphones since I was on the bus and train. The sound quality is very good w/ this PMP. I turned it all the way up to level 30 so that I could hear all of the dialogue.

It's about 8:25 now and I've had the player on since I got on the bus this morning at 5:20. At the end of Last Holiday, I got the battery icon pop up, so I think the OS72HR was alerting me that I had a low battery. I saved my avi file w/ high quality (800x480) settings, so I think I have almost used up all of my battery, so I won't be able to watch another movie on my trip home after work. I'll have to play around w/ my video files to find a better option that doesn't tax my battery so much. I should be able to get more than three hours battery life from this PMP. I haven't been timing the battery drain, so I'm not really sure how long my battery has been lasting me. I'd like to be able to watch video files for around 5 to 6 hours on one charge. I'm going to drain it and completely recharge it a three times to see how much I can improve this.

But again, this PMP is absolutely amazing. No freeze ups so far.

try also to turn down screen brightness as well as this will help with battery life, lower res vids will help a bit i am sure

as for the APP icon, this is really odd, well raz has hinted at an update soon so maybe you will see the icon appear soon

maderin1,

Thanks for such a quick response. I'm not complaining, I am very happy w/ my OS-72HR so far. But I wanted to give some detailed posts on the Discussion board to give others more info on this PMP. Hopefully this will help anyone who has recently bought one and wants to download 3rd party apps. Unfortunately, I don't have a camera w/ me, so I can't post any pictures or video of my screen.

I don't mind using the Browser option. Since this is the latest firmware, maybe the Application Icon isn't necessary anymore from previous players that had to update the firmware. ;-)

I'll play around w/ this some more to increase the battery life on this and try to give another update on this OS-72HR. But I will take you advice and turn down the brightness. I'm still using HandBrake to convert my files, so I'll also play around w/ the setting to create a lower res video file.

Do you know if anyone on the forum has translated the options in the 3rd party Text Reader? I'm going to check around w/ my co-workers to see if anyone here can read Manderin. Hopefully they can help me translate the options on the 3rd Party App. Just have to figure out the politically correct way to ask w/o offending anyone here at work. LOL

i did go through one by one an write them down with intention of posting but forgot anf now lost the paper

have yoiu seen my post on the unofficial firmware for this player, you better not use it as it does not have OTG but in there is the latest updates to the stock firmware for all these cc1600 player and the text reader is integrated with English and much better layout design so its not a Chinese only third party app anymore - point being is that, as raz has hinted at an update then we will see this integrated app in the next firmware

maderin1,

Thanks for the tip. I did see you post and I'm staying away from the unofficial firmware. I'm satisfied w/ the 3rd party Text Reader. I was looking at the 3rd party PDF Reader, but I decided that I don't really need to bother w/ it.

I downloaded viDrop and tried it. I was shocked at how fast it can convert a DVD. It converted my Wild Hogs DVD and compared it to a file I had already made using DVD Shrink and Handbrake. The file was a lot smaller, but the picture quality was also very bad. I think I'm going to stick w/ Handbrake to convert my files. Handbrake takes a lot longer to convert, but the picture looks better. I'll just do some testing to see how low I can dial down the audio and video bitrates to find a balance between file size and picture quality.

Sorry, but i don't really know how to post files on this forum. I do see the upload attachment option at the bottom of the post screen. Is there a limit to how big of a file I can attach? I can go back and convert a smaller file from Wild Hogs using viDrop and HandBrake.
