Picked this little tidbit up off of Head-Fi. Any chance you'll be getting these in, Raz? :P

Well, I saw that ClieOS got his test set of PL-50's this morning (over at head-fi). I'm really looking forward to reading it. This past year, I've really been into a new hobby of trying out budget phones and comparing them with higher end lines. This has been focused on dynamic driver based products becuase there simply arent any budget based balanced armature phones to compare them with. That is, until now. If soundMAGIC cut the right corners then they may start a whole new trend in budget BA phones. Of course, if they cut costs in the wrong areas, then these will die a very quick death and all but forgot within a couple of years. So far, of all the budget lines I've tried, I think SoundMAGIC has the right stuff to pull this off.

ClieOS, give us some details about the makeup. How many BA's in each can? What are the canal tubes like? How about the weight, tip types, and quality. Cord type and quality? Dont keep us waiting until next week. ^_^

Alright then, here are a few answers to your question:

1) One BA in each side.

2) Like that of Philips SHE9850's nozzle with a metal mesh on top actually. Slightly larger in diameter than Westone or Shure and have a 'bump' near the base to hole eartips in place.

3) Extremely light, 7 pair of eartips including 4 set of silicone single flange and 3 set of foam tips, the best quality among all the SoundMAGIC I own so far.

4) Y-cable, similar to that of NuForce NE-7M, quite decent actually.

Thanks for the info. Hmmm, single BA in the budget areana. Cant help but wonder how well it will match up against DD's in the $50-$70 price range. What phones are you going to compare them against?

The only dual drives that is under $100, as far as I know, is the one Apple makes. I have a pair in order and hopefully it will arrive in 2 weeks or so (snail mail :p). As of now, I think it is safe to say PL-50 is probably the best sounding sub$100 BA I own, or at least very close to the best.

Its nice to see that SoundMagic has improved their packaging, looks much nicer.

So how do the PL-50 feel in your ear, do they sit well like the PL-30?

I prefer PL-50's fit over PL-30 by a lot. I have to use aftermarket bi-flanges on PL-30 to get good fit while PL-50 stock single flange works just fine for me. The new cable on PL-50 is also an improvement over the PL-30 and hold its shape better than the old cable.
