Completed headphones and quick review of the sound on post 5.

We had a little extra time on our hands and decided to experiment with our HM5, we crafted a simple earcup with a semi open design and printed it in our UP 3D printer, so far we have only printed one cup as our printer decided to have its first break down during the printing of the second cup. I should have the second cup printed later today (fingers crossed).

Here are some pics of the progress so far. Soundwise, i will wait till the second cup is in place before i comment on that.

The design is just something simple we knocked out in a short amount of time, its not meant to win awards for beauty :)

wow- interesting, was just reading up on closed and open back variations yesterday - im still a bit green on it all but in doing this, and possibly selling as an extra, would this make the HM5 a true open design or is there something else that would be needed

but i love the idea of accessories in general for these phones - some cool engraved wooden ones would be nice too

I would say these printed cups are more of a frame work that you can then build on to mod the HM5 more, as you could add some material to the inside of the cup to act as dampeners, others might feel they want to leave the printed cups as is. I am currently printing the second cup, once its done i'll start testing the HM5 and do A/B tests along side a unaltered HM5 to see how the sound compares. Just listening to the one cup i can already sense the sound being more open but also having less bass.

I am not sure if we would sell these, as nice of a idea it would be it might not be practical, it takes almost 45 minutes to print one cup and that's as long as the printing doesn't muck up (this is mostly due to human error and not down to the quality of the machine).

If the mod does produce a good sound then i would look into retooling the design or how we print to make it this all more feasible for people to order. First lets get the second cup made properly :)

i suppose this is really what its all about for the lovers of sound, customising and playing about to get different feel/sound/quality etc etc

maybe make the cups with sliding vents so you can slide it to be open/closed and part way, making it easy to adjust the phones to suit each song

either way you should sell spares backs so people can get the old drill out and make their own :)

Already thought about that but too hard to make on the printer.

Second cup done and installed. Hows the sound? Wow! Its really good. Overall it keeps much of the HM5 sound signature but the sound is now more open, soundstage is a lot wider, which in turn has improved the separation between instruments and vocals. Bass is less, which is expected but it has not been reduced by what i was expecting. To my ears the sound has become a little more lively than when the closed back cups were on. The semi open cups really do make quite a difference. I've only been using the semi open HM5 for about an hour, i will continue to test and keep this updated. FYI i am using a FiiO X3 as my source.

Below are pictures of the semi-open cup being printed, the second cup is a different color from the first as we ran out of white material. The last picture is of a third cup that i am printing right now, i've made some changes to how its printed, if this method works then it might be feasible to print more of these cups faster and using less material.

Most of the material you see inside the cup is support material which will be removed when finished.

Clean it up a little with a dremel.

The finished cup attached to a HM5.

The below picture is of the cup being printed upside down without support material, if this method works we would cut the printing time in half and reduce material consumption by 35%.

I have tried the HM5 without the cups several times. I started to plan something that could change the cups in no time, but failed on getting an open cup from Yoga...

I'm really looking forward to some news on this area with your new taste for an open HM5!

I think it would be cheap to make it on some factory in China... In fact, some EXTREMELY open cup, like Sennheiser HD600, would be my preference... And a lot more easy to make, if you don't want the sound reflecting on the plastic.

This looks awesome!! I would definitely be interested in a set for sure. I love the fuller sound an open cup can provide, it really makes for a nice sound signature :) Great idea, nice execution :)

3D printing is the future (and the present, maybe :P)!

I don't have any printer, but maybe if they work the designs could be shared for other enthusiasts who want to try different sound signatures :)
