Haptic touch tech...

Postby brycewi » Mon Jul 28, 2008 10:46 am

Found this applicable as I was perusing the Internets:

http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/ha ... nology.htm

First, it shows the application of haptic touch tech in cell phones, then on to more general history of the tech.

I find this stuff extremely interesting. And I know there's already this tech on the market right now, but I think we're just seeing the tip of the iceberg with it.

So, would the phone vibrate then when you push a "buddon"? (like on the wii)

It's a bit more complex than just vibrating. Many devices contain a vibrating (or rather, a rotating hammer that creates the sense of vibration), but these haptic devices actually can mimic over a dozen different touch sensations.

So when you "push a button" on a touch screen, you're not going to feel a vibration, rather, perhaps a "feeling" that you have depressed something by 2mm with a rebound from the button itself. Those are two unique and complex sensations that go beyond just a simple vibration.

the new blackberry thunder (well now they call it storm) has this.. when you go to type using the on screen keyboard they say it feels like your really using buttons instead of the touchscreen.. if they can pull this off on a clear quality screen its really amazing

But how could the screen do that? Glass and plastic are kind of stiff. Would it instantly melt it, and then push the screen out?

That's what makes this kind of tech so fascinating.

It doesn't seem logical, but it still does it. I can't wait to try it myself! :)

But its not possible unless you break something...

Or is it: The glass could be divided into nine squares on the screen, and when you push something, the hydraulics let the "buddon" whosh down, and click back up again.
