Today i got sent to me a Meizu M8 from a supplier within China. I will snap a lot more pics and videos shortly.

Just to give my quick summary on it, its a very stylish phone, light weight and certainly not cheap feeling. Overall the phone quality is very good, great reception, but i have not been able to get GPRS to work as i don't have my carriers settings and Wifi works great, used it in a starbucks, web browsing is cool.

Video playback is disappointing, RK2706 players have better video performance and the M8 can't play anything higher than its screen res, anything higher and videos will not play properly.

Audio is very good, loud speaker is very nice, sort fine, scrolling is nice, show album art (no cover flow), multiple playlist support.

Apps load well, got ScummVM to run, other WinCE apps do look like they will run on the M8 easily.

Screen quality is good, but not as nice as say the OS-43 screen (a little dissapointed there)

Touch screen is very responsive, multitouch is there for rezing images.

I have to say that i do think a lot of how the UI works, like how it flows and how certain finger actions create different responses is a total rip from the iPhone, really disappointing there, been playing with my friends iPhone recently and i can tell you the Meizu really did a knock off job on the UI. Oh well, i am not really complaining, i was just hoping that Meizu would have stepped up a little and not been so blatant.

Well i have only been using the phone for less than 12hrs, but it does look like a good phone, there are some issues, not sure if its firmware related or if i just haven't got the hang of it. Haven't been able to try the bluetooth yet either.

Will drop pictures and a general video review soon, followed up with more detailed reviews of different functions and stuff in a day or two, once i have got the hang of everything.

Will MP4 Nation sell these, maybe, we would be getting it from a company we deal with in China and not directly from Meizu, but the warranty would be valid and such. Price tag, 8GB would go for under $450.

does not sound that impressive so far, and too much ipoddy by all accounts

and at £316 for this baby it aint gonna be in my collection anytime soon

would people really pay this much for a phone, rather than get one on contract, where you pay for it with your contract fee, to me i cant see all the fuss, its just a PDA

i agree there, well at least for the type of person that i am, the cell phone that i used before switching to the M8 is old and simple, only used for calling or text message, i can see already that after giving all the functions on the M8 a thorough run through, i probably won't be using it again and as i do not like on screen keyboards, be it on the M8 or an iPhone, i might be switching back to my old phone.

Also setting up the GPRS/Text messaging is not automatic, like most phones do when you put in the sim card, its being a real pain in the ass right now, can't send Text messages. Also in Hong Kong sometimes local numbers still show the 852 country code, on other phones, its fine as it still find the contact, on the M8, it can't distinguish the contact. I think this is a fault on Window Mobile as the other T68 WM phone i used for a little while had the same issue.

Yeah 12hr in to using this and i can see there is still work to be done on the firmware, UI is pretty to look at, but there are issues. Then again, they haven't even release V1 of the firmware, so i can't really bitch.

nice one Raz was wondering when you would finally get your mits on one. Is the video playback really worse than the RK2706? My unbranded RM970 has real problems (particularly with edge rendering/ anti aliasing) decoding video (espeically xvid) at anything near 720x480 let alone above, I wouldn't have thought a 600mhz+ ARM cpu would really perform worse than a rockchip. Also the specs on the M8 site reports that the M8 can support video bit rates up to 2 or 3MB/p/s and the RK2706 certainly cannot do that.

From all the reports I have read the M8 does definitley need some work. I was very dissapointed to hear that the final version would not incude Wifi too. The problem is is that it is way to expensive. The iphone (unsuprisingly) is a far more complete and feature rich (not to mention the app store etc) device and can be bought (new and offline) for very close to the M8's asking price. I find it hard to justify it's price point. Btw Raz is your one a test unit with wifi? or the final retail version (without wifi)?

Still needs a lot of work but I think it could get a lot better with time as the Win CE 6.0 architecture is still relatively new to portable devices and provides a good platform to build upon. Looking forward to the review!
