I have found some awesome images icons for the s:flo that are under the GNU Lesser General Public License. Can I use images under this license for themes???

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Clear

EDIT:
Results of the poll
YES one can/ Can not
YES 85% [ 6 ]
NO 14% [ 1 ]

I will be posting a petition for raz to post a policy

I think the beginning of the entry on the GNU should explain it:

Quote:
The GNU Lesser General Public License (formerly the GNU Library General Public License) or LGPL is a free software license published by the Free Software Foundation.

Being that it's freeware, I'd say YES, it should be ok to use.

I'd say this warrants a closer look, especially with the whole Pasen 747 theme pulled from a Nationite user and put on a video review here in the past week. In fact, I would mandate that any themes placed on here are freeware; however, may not be used for commercial (includes demonstrating on You Tube) use without the owner's consent.

this is a very grey area, and would mean also the YBQ ask permission from the original site that the images came from for permission also and so on and so on ....... .... ...

but i understand what you are saying here but it would be impossible to enforce, many of the tools, themes we also get, besdides the ones we make ourselves, are from Chinese sites, and as was stated by christian, they have a real dislike of foreigners and so getting permission from them to use their themes and elements of their themes would be a near impossible job, they are not all like this though and also alot of the work we have done on this site re: using these players is also being used by them, Ramos RM970 modding originated from here, but at least they gave acknowledgment to the original source (us), so we should do the same

the only thing that really can be done is that themes can be used free, but if you get them from somewhere you should give credit to the original source, at least that shows a little thought, and other sites should do the same for us, credit the original source, which we pretty much do anyway

most of the time, if you give credit and the original author sees this than all is well, but its when you take something and claim it your own that the battles start, but mostly give credit and all will be well

Agreed, it is a gray area. My comment to anyone entering a theme on here...be aware that it most likely will be used (which was the intent) and could show up on a video...hopefully not on a new player. I suppose if it does then you can feel as though you created something cool enough to be used commercially. Could Raz or someone create a post that describes GNU policy please?

On another note...

I was really thrown back by Christian's (from Pasen) comment on dislike (unsure if it was him or plural meaning Pasen, or the country) of foreignors (is Christian Chinese or from another country?). Who was the group doing the disliking because I deal with Chinese coworkers who haven't expressed sentiment of dislike. I just found that part of his response in very bad taste. I would like him to respond as if this is true, then I won't buy any Chinese branded players. That sort of response can be very damaging to this website as most of the products are Chinese. Anyways...I'm off topic but needed to make myself clear there.

I second that. More so, Raz should make a policy that governs all of the themes/mods that are put onto this site. It would need to say:
*Permissions ( Frimware can not be used for any commercial use -- Themes can be moded/ redone by anyone.
*who owns the content (e.g. Mp4 nation owns all submitted themes or the author owns the themes)
*what content can be used in making frimware. (E.g All original images/code must be under the GNU/GLGP)

There is a need for a policy as for there are at least two other cases:
http://www.mp4nation.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=4201
http://www.mp4nation.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4269

YES, I know that it will be impossible to really enforce these rules, but still having them would bring a sense of security.

{ALSO NOTE: The images are under the GNU Lesser General Public License (GLGP) which is different from the GNU.}
