How do you burn in ? Lets share

Postby darkadam » Sat Mar 28, 2009 2:18 pm

Hi, just wondering how you guys burnt in your ear/headphone.
This is my method and it seems to work well for me.

1) whatever i'm listening to @ normal volume - 24 hours
2) pink noise @ normal volume, slowly increasing it over the duration till mid high - 48 hours
3) Mixture of pink, brown and white noise @ mid to mid high- 48 hours
4) Frequency Sweeps 20-20000 Hz @ mid to mid high- 48 hours

1-2 hour Breaks every 12 hours of burn in. Depending on earphones, if they claim a higher frequency range, i'll change the frequency sweep range as well. But 20-20000 works well for most. The reason i chose this method is that 1) i get to listen to them first when their out of the box :P 2) In this method, the stress on the headphones is slowly increased over time. from music to pink noise to white noise to freq sweeps. Also, the volume is increased from mid to high. Jumping straight to frequency sweeps at high volumes on a brand new pair of headphones is a sure way to damage them. 3) Breaks are important as you don't want to overstress and thus damage the drivers as well.

Total burn-in time excluding breaks about 170 hours. Total acutal time about 9-10 days :P
I know some people don't believe in burn in but well... To each his own :P

thansk for sharing how you do your burn in, i can't say that i am that careful, i normally just let them play and normally notice just how the sound gradually becomes better, never really though about approaching it as you have.

Max volume tone test on repeat for 15 minutes.

If they break I just return them!

Seams to be enough for me.

I used to be as careful as you darkadam. I had several differnt methods that depended on the type of phones and speakers I was burning in. Nowdays though I am a bit on the sloppy side of things. I just run them on a ammped source for 50 to 100 hours with an infinite loop of the Bink Audio Test CD (which you can get here: http://www.4horsemen.net/binkster/full_cd.zip). I keep the source volume at 40%. I take notes on the sound quality before I start and after its done. I really dont care about the middle of the session. I do this with all my dynamic driver phones wether they are cheap or not. More often than not, you can hear a good improvement. Sometimes not at all, others very little. But the majority have proven that its worth the effort.

I know a lot of people that burn in, but for me Id rather not burn them in and use them normally so that in my ears I can experience the different changes for the burn in, and also make comparisons from when they were new, almost new -> burned in; to see if its actaully better.

As for your methods, is it steps 1) through to 4), or are they all individual methods?

I found out aswell that you should never burn in plugging them straight into your pc's speaker output jack.
