Released into their lower end spectrum range comes the RAmos Icon T17, a 4.3 inch 8GB player released at 399 yuan / $58.
The T17 is a simple looking non-touchscreen player that uses the Rockchip RK2728 chip which offers 720P HD playback via TV-OUT for a variety of file types including H.264, MKV, RMBV, VOB and more.
A lot’s been put on the ‘floral’ UI too, boasting a colourful, simple and intuitive display.
Other features include eBook reader PlayFX audio, 5 hours of video playback and 15 hours of music.
It’s also pretty slim at just 11mm.

Cost! Since this chip is based on the old RK27 architecture, it cost less to make than the new RK28 chips.

from what i have seen and read its AVI abilities remain as the original 27 series and that means lower res files and lower everything but its been boosted up with MKV etc abilities to give an entry level chip into the MKV market, this player is like the window G82 we have been seeing which looks like a nice functional player

After owning an RM970 I will have to give anything Rockchip 27 based a miss. The chipset is just not powerful enough in my mind especially because most of the video content I download for viewing on these devices is XviD/DivX, and given the fact playing HD on these low res screened players has almost no benefits apart from when using Tv-Out. Also having to reconvert standard def Xvid is a big step backwards IMO baring in mind we now have all these cheap HD players flying around.

well there is now, only took nearly 3 years but go on to www.mympx.org as they have made some small apps for the 26 series players, chess and a few others - its taken a hell of a lot of work though, they can only make apps because the 26 series players used RKP formats for games and some players allowed RKP files to be loaded onto the player, so they are piggy backing of that and basically using the game architecture/launcher system to create small home brew things - its been slow mainly because its all backward engineering etc and getting down and dirty in assembler, they have parts of the 27 SDK but nothing really going down - rockchip have been very very closed on their systems, they dont like people messing and have never released any info, unlike ingenics and a few other who were quite open

Is there any other info like clockspeeds and bus cache? maybe RAM? sorry... I've done courses in IT, Hardware architectures etc. This stuff really interests me. I'd like to do something for this community if I knew enough. no matter how big or small. I like these forums I think I've found a new home :)

there will be somewhere, for which chip?? the 28 or 27, there were some docs flying about on www.mydigit.com and i think in the thread on mympx there is an SDK and maybe the guys there will have the info you need, not pushing you away here its just that is where the action is happening on any kind of brewing for these players (rockchip) -

and yes, anything you can do would be great its just these rockchip, in general are so tied down its a hell of a job doing anything with them, the cc1600 players seem to have some homebrewing going on and there is an SDK around to make apps for it ( like thre PDF reader and image viewer)
