This press release off iMP3 seems to imply that sometime this month RAmos intends to announce its first MID, which will be running on Android and considering that RAmos and Rockchip seem to quite close buddies, i would not at all be surprised if their MID ran on the RK2808....infact i wouldn't be surprised if that video we saw of the RK2808 Android MID was infact the RAmos MID.

Do we already know which ARM core has ended up in the rk2808? If it's anything less than a Cortex A8, it will suck rocks because up till now each "Chinese" Rockchip is the result of slapping (very hard) together:

1. a powerful American (LSI) ZSP400.
2. a weak English tea-sipping ginger tosser ARM.
3. some Frenchie audio codec.
4. a few other peripherals salvaged from a garbage bin somewhere.

Remember, Linux/Android doesn't run on the DSP or the video accelerator. The ARM core is all you got, unless you want to spend five years hand-coding things (like 3DLabs did).

The absence of cc1600 LIMPs up till now tells much the same story: either too weak or too labour-intensive.

google translation FTW

anyway, looks like a promising MID, i've always been curious about the rk2808 because not so long ago there was a newspost this chipset would be used in cellphones but i can't find any info on that (or they're simply not released), that would be nice if they could implement the same music player and sound quality we're used to from rockchip in an MID or cellphone

well...according to the old artice published showing the rockchip prototype (which this most probably will turn out to be) we can expect web browsing speeds which are not as fast as devices running cortex A8 but faster than ARM11 based cpu's like the 6400 series used in the original iPhone and Meizu M8.

The original article also showed a video of the rockchip prototype and what appeared to be a slightly sluggish Ui. The real question is if the device in question is that very prototype have they optimized the performance for a smoother Ui experience?

What is for sure is that it will almost certainly out peform both the SmartQ 5/7 and chuwi MID which all suffered from relatively weak video playback performance.

Personally I am very excited about this. If they manage to keep the price down and optimize andoroid we could have the best/most powerful PMP/MID to come out of china ever, not to mention a lot less of the FW problems that seem to plague many chinese PMP's/MID's.

A demo doesn't tell us which or how hardware is exercised. We need better balanced chips and less secrets. Wasn't Android supposed to be open?

Mad - Slightly off topic but, did you read my post about a music player GUI on the SmartQ's. Gives an example of the sort of advantage MID's like this have over MP3 players and their 'fixed' GUI's.

i did and it was good, no question but for me too much loike being on a computer, when i use a media player i want it as far from looking like a PC as possible, i now it sounds mad but this is partly why i hate the way players list by filename as well because again, if i want filenames i go on the PC but my media player is not to be anything like a computer - the thing you showed was good but i want detachment from the computer style and a good media player UI helps - i know, im not making sense here but i know where i am at

From the image render shown it looks like it is the RK2808 prototype after all. If this device performs well this will really put the cat amongst the pigeons. It will be one of, if not the first 1080p capable android device in the world. Lets not forget this is also from ramos, rockchip based and for the chinese market so it should be priced competetively.

If it has decent battery, a low price and the ui isn't to sluggish, I'm 100% sold. However being China as we alll well know, nothing is for certain. Very exciting stuff though, definitely the only thing standing in the way of me and the Oppo S39.

ps. Where did the image come from Mad?

Yeah this does almost seem too good to be true, and when it comes to pre release info about chinese PMP's it usually is! On paper though this really does look like an absolute cracker. Mainly due to the fact it will be running a solid OS, so with any luck will be able to bypass many of the fw issues that often plague chinese devices. I did read somewhere also that google will be giving devleopers options on what resolution screens they want to optimize their applications for in the future.

However, I am actually not a huge fan of the android media playback controls and UI layout. The video playback app is very basic to say the least but hopefully ramos will enhance the media plyback functionality. In fact they will already have had to if they are intending to support 1080p video playback and other formats that stock android does not support.

The possibility of decent speed web browsing though is a major selling point and a capacitive touch screen is always welcome. Not to mention the hackery that could also ensue once the community get hold. The thing is there are still many areas where this could fall apart: poor touch screen implementation, sluggish performance, patchy file support, weak battery, weak wifi signal etc etc so I am definitely not counting any chickens at this stage. Another major issue is pricing....Nevertheless if Ramos manage to pull this off, this will definitely be a major warning shot to other players in the game.

If Ramos and certain other manfactures keep evolving at the rate they are, and can manage to get more clued up about foreign markets I think that we could be seeing more Chinese manufacturers hitting mainstream europen, asian and US markets within a few years.

agreed sere, ramos certainly are on a path, and wit teclast norw joining the android with full HD support there must have been some development going on with regards to the media capabilities of the android system, this one will be on a rockchip player ... mmm .. not sure how that will fare but seeing as even the big guys are their devices get it wrong i dont think we can really bank on any product from anywhere until its out in the wild and in users hands
