Ifs not been confirmed that SmartQ second device that they will be launching is not a portable media player, but a desktop box set for those that want to watch HD videos from their PC on their TV. The desktop set looks to have some serious power, normally such sets within China are geared for the HD RMVB playback, but this device will be able to play a multitude of HD video formats.

This device, for those not familiar with such devices, basically has a slot of memory cards and external USB hard drives to connect to them, the device in turn in connected to your TV, the box then plays any videos that you have on your choice of memory storage on your TV. Just like MP4 Players, these devices do vary in their ability to decode videos, thus affecting their video and audio playback abilities.

This device, having a HDMI port, looks quite promising for those that have a lot of HD videos and have been looking for an easy way to watch them on their large screen TV without degradation of video playback.

saw it this morning, very impressive. devices like these have been around for quite some time, Lacie, Western Digital, Belkin, etc. all HD media players supporting a variety of formats.

the western digital TV media player stands out most according to reviews, supports full 1080p and does it fast with no problem, whereas other brand sometimes have problems. it doesn't have a build-in harddisk though so you still need to connect an external USB harddrive.

thanx for the info, but I think you spelt the first line of the blog post wrong. Surely it should 'It has been confirmed' rather than 'not confirmed'.

If you familiar with Mvix HD player. they have built-in HDD up to 1 TB, it support many video format but not Realmedia, mkv which is shame. It's portable, wireless stream media from PC, USB host etc. I've been checking new FW that could support RMVB or MKV. Seems it's not gonna happen. This smartQ looks cool, but I bet it will be expensive.

like similar products, it most likely will have no internal memory, some do have the option of inserting a HDD into them, but i don't know about this. What you normally do is just use a thumb drive to put all your videos on and put it in the front USB slot of the device and

WD player does NOT play 1080p. It fails even with 1080p xvid files and has big problems playing back 720p h.264 content. In other words, it's a piece of crap.

Amazingly enough, only good (working) media players are chinese Networked Media Tanks (like those manufactured by EGreat ).

Also, what levels of h.264 is this player capable of decoding? I'm asking, because that's the only technical parameter worth knowing about those devices (if it has enough processing power to decode h.264, it's very unlikely that it'll fail at decoding xvid.and other 'simple' codecs).

This is a blatant lie. I have been using this player for over a month now..playing MANY 720p mkv and avi files with zero complications. I have played a few 1080p files as well...also without any problems. The only shortcoming of the player is no network support and no DTS downmix.

Either you got a faulty unit, never owned one at all, or are simply spewing false information.

I have yet to play a single supported file that didn't work flawlessly.
