I thought i would bring more attention to this as i am very impressed with what SmartQ has done with their new firmware for the T5, user sere83 has done a video review:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wHlXw2gJwc

The SmartQ can now sort music, playlists etc and their GBA emulation seems better than that of what the JXD 301 could do. This player is definitely using the most out of the ADI blackfin chip.

I haven't been interested in a gaming MP4 player until now. I am very impresses. I Like the new GUI even though it so basic and simple.

How soon will the new players ordered have this new firmware pre-installed? Any guess?

I'd also like to see if there's any other benefits to the new firmware like maybe better audio or video codec support. It already offers a great range of different formats, but are the quality up to par with other players?

Also I seen that it has a DC jack on the bottom. Will this also charge via mini USB or only through that DC jack?

well they don't come with installed firmware (i just kind of found this out), you need to download the firmware of their site on to the memory card that will be used with the player - there is no internal memory. Also the way the firmware works is that things like GBA/NES/SNES emulators are optional elements that you can choose to install, each being different modules. So maybe homebrewing might be easier on the T5 as you would just need to make extra modules instead of writing an entire new firmware.

Any word yet from your SmartQ rep? Think you might have them by the end of next week? :)

I noticed that the buttons seemed like they were rather "clicky" instead of having a more smooth action. How durable are the actual players? How much memory can you have in these?

The specs. say it can handle up to 8GB but thats only because thats the biggest available so far. I'm pretty sure Ras said it could handle SDHC memory cards up to 16 to 32GB whenever they become available.

Well tell me something...would you rather buy one of these or a "hacked" PSP? Which I'm beginning to see on Craigslist in my area? I mean, couldn't you play the homebrews on a hacked PSP that is around 150?

Are there more than the three buttons I see on the front? If not, how does emulate the gba shoulder buttons etc.
does it come with 4gb built in or nothing? I'm a little confused by conflicts between the site and some posts here.
head to head with video and games the main concern who wins Gemei x590 or this SMartQ T5? and which is physically larger?

The smartq uses the + volume (on top) as the fourth button. These four buttons are also programmable in gaming mode. No built in memory at all. Firmware and media is stored on a removable SD card (up to 8GB SDHC, regular sized SD which is fairly cheap). Not sure about who wins on the game front or video performance, but the T5 has a better looking display (LTPS QVGA vs a standard QVGA on the x590). The T5 is a little bigger: T5 (and T5-II) 112 × 58 × 13 mm, x590 108 x 52 x 12.7 mm, both around 100g.

If you were to ask sere83 or nateee, I'm sure they would say... get the new T5-II.

the special is for the T5, raz is, i think, gonna stock the T5ii but it will be more expensive than this so it depends what you want, a very good player for a bargain price or and improved version for a larger price

Unfortunately, if the video format compatibility is increased for the psp slim, the smartq t5 (or t5-II) simply will not be able to compete.

If you bought a prehacked psp it could do everything the smartq could do plus n64 emulation, skype mobile, wifi, run ISO's, UMD games, XMB interface. All of this in a bright 4.2" wqvga 16.7 million color lcd

However, if sony does not release a firmware update that increases video format compatibility, the smartq t5 would be good for gaming although you can get touchscreen and more video oriented mp4's for much cheaper that already have integrated memory (ainol v2000se or newman touch)
