There has been a lot of people asking for wifi or UMPC players, so i am going to throw the idea out there, but right off the bat i want to tell you that if we do have a UMPC type player with Wifi it will probably be priced somewhere in the region of $250 to $290

So here are some features:
ARM Processor 400mHz
OS: Win CE 5.0
4.3" Touchscreen with 480 x 272 screen resolution
Audio: MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG, WAV and supports DRM WMA
Video: AVI, WMV, ASF
Wifi enabled - you can check email, surf the web, connect to your home network etc but the wifi will eat up the battery, on a full charge the player will only last about 2hrs with wifi on.
Preinstalled (and licensed) word, excel, powerpoint, PDF reader
Games: some preinstalled games, but it also comes with pocketnester - emulator for NES, you can install other emulators like MameCE if you want.
Dual spakers
expandable SD/MMC slot (upto 4GB)
USB port (supports OTG so you can add an external HDD)
64mb SDRAM

I don't want to put any pics as i haven't chosen a design, there are a few, but i am mainly looking at ones with a gamepad type layout.

Now most likely it will come with only 1GB of internal memory :(

So would you be interested in this if (just the player) cost only $250?
Would you be interested in this if it came bundled with a 4GB SD card, a mini/foldable/rollable keyboard, mini mouse (possible wireless) and a viewing stand for about $290?

Please post your views on such a device - i really want to know if people would be interested in this, keeping in mind the price that it would go for.

I've paid that much for the sony psp and lets be honest, the mp3 playback is awful. If the sound is good, thats the player I been looking for outside the apple product line. A do all end all MP4 player. (PMP)

well there probably won't be any real firmware updates for this product, as it will come with a stable release of Windows CE however you will be able to load a lot of programs, like emulators or other apps - it uses a form of windows media player for video and audio, but there are third party apps that you can use (just like on your pc) to watch videos and video playback is supposedly good.

if they were not running windows CE then i would grab half a dozen for a job i am working on. But i need full flash player 9 support and CE does not provide this. Otherwise these would be great for what i need them for, as they are cheap and easy to replace.

specs look ok but they are relatively cheap and that in itself is a worry regarding quality

I would have to see it in action to get me exited. Honestly, I have spent a few hundred bucks in the past few month to get myself the best players I could for music, videos and games so I wont be making any new purchases soon. Wi-Fi is really cool for these devices and maybe if the unit rools really good, some impulse shopping could occur, but no promises.

I think these type of player could attract a different kind of customer that is interested in a more robust type of player.

If I had the money I'd love to get a device like that. I would also go for the accessory package if I was to buy one.

lol, its ok if you don't have the cash, i just want to know if what is being offered is attractive at the price.

I wouldn't sell this device if it turned out to be crap, i am not sure when i will get a sample unit, i hope its soon, i really want to try and see how easy it is to install third party apps and stuff.

Not sure how i will test the wifi, we don't have i don't have wifi at work or home....maybe i can try it a starnucks

hmmm, interesting idea. I've have been interested in these type of devices for a while but.......I can forsee a few problems with this.

1. Firstly you can buy an archos 605 30gb with wifi for around the same price. The archos has an 800X480 screen, internal harddrive and probably better battery and web browser. The only advantages I can see with the type of device you speak of as compared to an archos 605 is game emulation, USB-OTG and 3rd party apps, and a couple of extra codecs, not really deal breakers though, I think I would always choose the archos. Plus for $300 you can get a cowon A3 which although has no wifi is an absolute powerhouse of a pmp with great video battery and can decode HD content.

2. Considering the price, without an SDHC card slot, 1gb internal storage is IMO simply too small, even with a 4gb sd card. Can they not give SDHC support? USB-OTG is good and everything but who wants to carry a hard drive with them?

3. While 480x272 for the screen res is not too bad, most 4.3 inch screened devices usually come with 800x480 screens these days as standard, and it really makes a big difference.

4. Will a 400mhz cpu be powerful enough to decode WMV,ASF and AVI up to 720x480 2Mb/s? I think If I was paying that much I would expect the device to be able to. To be fair I presume it will be able to but I know the Cowon Q5 runs a 500mhz alchemy chip and the UI is said to be a little sluggish although the video playback is great.

Overall I don't think it's a bad idea as it's always nice to see more advanced Pmp type devices coming out. However I think the price is simply too high for me considering the low spec and other options available plus the fact that the battery and tech support would probably be worse than say archos or coown.

Let me just put it this way. I'll pay for quality. And I'll pay for features.

If it's a bit more expensive but I feel like I'm getting more, then that's what I'll do.

yes quality will be the key. Not meaning to sound negative but I still don't think the price can be justified when you can get a similar Pmp from a well established company like Archos or Cowon for a similar price.

After reading some of the posts I'm forced to agree that there are other alternatives like Archos around the same price that would be considered at this price range. Of course, the Archos models that include Wi-Fi are way beyond $250 if they are not refurbished and the point of purchasing these pmp/mp4 units is that you get a realatively good unit for a fraction of the price of a well known brand.

So, if it performs well and it gets me exited, I could see myself buying it.

It appears that there are alot of devices out there for near the same price or a litle more, those that could afford it seem to say they do not mind paying that little more for a named brand and all the support it offers.

Even forgetting the hatred of apple for a min, would it not be a better choice to get an 8GB IPod Touch for $279 dollars than this device for $250. If i was to be interested in these type of devices again i would prefer to pay the extra $20 and get the touch

sorry raz, don't mean to diss your (possible) product line, but surely these devices can not match the IPod or the other models mentioned in this thread.

so in all, if i were to invest it would be in a branded product, even if the price were a little higher, for that piece of mind and better quality, it would be worth it
