Product Description:

The Brainwavz R1 are driven by two dynamic drivers, in a woofer and tweeter configuration. Most earphones only use one speaker, with the R1 two speakers are utilized to provide a better reproduction of sound across the entire audible sound spectrum. Good value for money but might not be for all ears.
  • For it's price, the Brainwavz R1 is a good buy for those looking for under $50 headphones.

For those getting the Remote/mic set. Make sure the device you intend to use it with supports the 3.5mm TRRS jack (3 bands instead of 2). The mic will not work and you will find yourself listening to sound as if they're coming from underwater, although holding down the remote button will probably solve your problem

Have it 3 days for now and here's what I think. I got the newer versions it will seem, with memory cable and slightly longer nozzle with a mesh fitted.

Let's start with the bad and probably only thing that's bad about this headphone.

The cable. It's pretty standard, no special sheath or durable design so it will require good taking care of. The flat Edge at the Y cable worries me as it seems like a good area for concentrating stress and the memory wire at the end for the better over ear fit looks like it's just a piece of solid metal wire taped over the last 3 inch of the cable. I guess only time and use will tell how durable they are.

The housing itself is plastic. Can feel cheap to some people but it looks good enough for me. The dark red is not too bright. While the housing is pretty solid, I worry about the seam so I would advise care and not bang it around or step on it. Unfortunately the housing shape may not be best if you have small ears. It pushes against my tragus too much and can feel uncomfortable after extended wear. Contrary to a lot of pictures online, the housing does come with earwax guard built in.

The tips that come with it should provide a good fit for people with a wide range of ear canal size, but I noticed the bi-flanged tips they provided has a core that is a little bit smaller than the rest, making fitting or changing them a pain. Still not a big problem as they can be readily replaced.

The Dual Dynamic drivers does deliver what it promised. You get pretty good distinct lows and highs and the mid are decent.

Overall, the sound is nothing remarkable but do not get me wrong, they are good. You will be hard pressed to find another pair of headphones that sounds as good within it's price range, especially if you live outside of the States.

Despite that, they are still as good as if not better than some of the sub $80 range headphones out in the market.

The mic has so far been of little issue for me, although they do sit a bit high - just below collarbone. They seem very clear and doesn't pick up too much background noise in call, but I have yet to use them in a noisy situation. I've been on jogs with them and haven't notice any microphonics, even without a clip. Multi-function remote button works just fine, although you will need a device that supports a TRRS jack for it to work.

The hard carrying case is a nice addition for traveling but a bit thick for my liking, again something easily remediable.

    +Good value for money
+clear sound across the range from the dual drivers
+One of the best sound for it's price range
+good remote/mic features - little to no microphonics

-Not for all ear types (but so are most IEM)
    -Questionable Durability
-Memory cable feels cheaply and haphazardly done.

Great entry-level headphones if you are on a tight budget. Better still if you can get them on sale, but be prepared to take good care of them if you want your money's worth.

Its good to buy economic entry level dual driver in ear but not better than R3
  • I own Brainwavz R3, S1, M5 & alpha. So, I would say these are

defenitely better than M5 & alpha in terms of overal sound but as

compared to R3 or S1 they are not good enough. Definitely price

of s1 & R3 is high, so as an entry level dual driver in ear are

fefinitely good buy, I used them via Fiio e11 & Fiio e12. The

build quality is not that good as R3.

  • The sound of this earphone is not bad for the price. The bottom of the microphone works with mi iPad and not have problems.

My order came after 25 days, because I live in Peru.

The sound is good comparable with my brainwavz m2 but with a little more space for the dual driver.

The relationship quality-price is amazing, is the better buy in this month

Awesome headphones
  • I've used these headphones for about 6 months and i use them almost everyday at work.
-The sound quality is unmatched by anything else I've listened to in the price range
-I love the case and different tips with extras because i tend to lose them
-plastic build isn't great but since there's a case it's not an important factor
-has a lot of bass but the clarity for the music i listen to is still good

Initial impression on build quality
  • Not so impressed with the build quality. Right out of the box the mic housing is broken although still functional. Sound quality-wise I have yet to appreciate them after a burn in (and I haven't tried the other ear tips yet). I will update this review if and when I get a replacement.

Shipping to Australia took exactly 2 weeks.

High quality, balanced sound
  • Good earphones. I use together with Sansa Clip +, a sound not the bad. It is enough low frequencies, high and average too. As I have DUNU Trident DN-12-in comparison with them, the sound is better, the scene is wider. The only minus - not so good sound insulation. The money fulfills completely.

Great Sound
  • I bought these to replace my SoundMAGIC E-10.
At first I was startled at the loss of the bass, but after trying all the different included tips and getting a better fit (the biflange worked best for me) I was soon pleased to find that the bass is there, but just not as pronounced.

These earphones have a V-shaped sound IMHO, everything is there but the outstanding lows and highs make the mids sound a bit muted in comparison.

Compared to the E-10, these have a much wider soundstage and detail, and sound great with a bigger variety of music without needing EQ tuning. I also loved the convenient hard case that was included wi these.
On the other hand these don't get as loud as the E-10 w/o amplification, and the bass, even though it sounds great, doesn't have the same impact.

The only issues that I had with these was the build quality:
    1. The in-line microphone casing is incredibly brittle, cracked for no apparent reason within a month and fell apart soon afterwards.
    2. I didn't like the memory wire, after half a year of adjusting it the memory wireslid out of the housing and it was very difficult to put it back in.
    3. The earphones' wide nozzles are a bit problematic: they don't have a groove to hold the tips in place, and as a result after the tips get stretched by the nozzles the tips just slide off

Moderate value when on SALE
  • The headphone housing and the 5cm of shapeable cable have an good build quality, nice enough but nothing to rave about; bad thing is that the rest is slightly below average looking (cable, plastic splitter, mic, plug).

Another thing is that I'm not liking the mic location, I feel that it's too close and makes no sense being next to the splitter and not being merged with it, just silly.

Also, really hard to keep in place if active at all, but good for commuting and sitting elsewhere.

Sound wise, well, I dont have much experience, but they sound ok for being on the go, depends a lot on getting a good fit deep inside the ear; Sadly, I doesnt hold a candy to my ATH-400 why makes me throw up rainbows.

Packaking and goodies are excelent, quick shipping too.

My first dual drivers
  • The R1s are very focused on bass. In some songs the bass is simply too much. But where bass is needed, the R1s deliver. Bass music is very well played by them. I listen to a lot off EDM with the R1s because of this. The sound is also fairly clean.

The accessories are nice, for example the hard case is very useful. The fit and isolation is good with the provided tips. The microphone and button work fine.

The build quality is where Brainwavz usually lacks because it is hard to make durable low budget IEMs, I reckon. The R1s are no exception. The plastic housings feel a bit cheap and I have heard that they might break in half easily. My R1s' left earphone started having difficulties after a couple of months active use. The sound got quieter on it but it fixed itself (or something), atleast for now.

I really like the R1s for their bass and clean sound. People who do not want so much bass in their music can reduce the bass with EQ settings. The Brainwavz R1s are very good for their price and I do recommend them.
