mixed feelingsReview by KL
Overall
During development these were billed as the B2's little brother but with more bass, and I think they have done a decent job at that, but there are some caveats as explained below.

With the stock wide bore tips, you do get the clean and detailed sound of the B2 with added bass, but I wasn't always able to get a good seal, I really needed a tip size that lies between medium and large. With a bad seal, I either got piercing highs or a lack or bass.

With narrow bore tips, it is less airy and more congested and it becomes more V shaped.

If you happen to own Comply T-400 tips, it noticeably boosts the bass quite a lot and warms up the mids, you could say that it makes it more fun sounding.

As you can see you can get different sound signatures depending on what tips you use, and your opinion on the M4 may vary on what you hear.

When I first got these, I actually liked them quite a lot, I guess due to the excitement I bought something new, but after some time there was just something I didn't like about them. In particular when listening to metal and rock, there was an edginess to the sound I didn't like, sometimes the mids would sound a little thin too. So I do have mixed feelings about the M4, I didn't take to it as much as other Brainwavz models. (Posted on 5/9/13)
Amazing for the priceReview by Jeong
Overall
I got these on an MP4Nation sale, and I now regret not picking up a second pair at the price.

First, the sound:
Overall tonal balance tends very slightly towards the warm side, with smoothed but well extended highs and deep lows. There is a slight but noticeable mid-bass hump that extends into the lower mids, but it isn't unpleasant (to my ears, at least), and lends some warmth to the overall signature. Horizontal soundstage is average, with not very much depth, but instruments on well mastered tracks (I used the album "Promise", by the Eminence Symphony Orchestra) are resolved well, and decay sounds subjectively quick, helping with resolution.

Just one thing:
Many other reviews here call the mids slightly recessed, but I'm not hearing that. The chords are slightly thicker than on my Sony XBA-4, and the tonality in the upper registers is noticeably colder than on my Klipsch X-10, but personally, I like that. Your mileage may vary, but nobody I know who has tried these have anything bad to say about them.

TL;DR:
Simply put, these are amazing value at MSRP, and if you ever see them on sale for less than $30 (on Amazon.com, or right here on MP4Nation), please do not hesitate since there is nothing better for your money.

Additional thoughts:
I know the M4s are said to benefit from amping, but again, I don't really hear that, here. The M4s do respond quite noticeably to different sources, though - specifically, different output impedances give different sound signatures. A source with output impedance of lower than 2 Ohms gives a noticeably darker and wider signature than a source with 6 Ohms measured, and there is decent synergy with FiiO's E6 amp (<1 Ohm OI).

I have not encountered any issues with noise floor using Cowon J2, Samsung Galaxy S3 (International), FiiO E6, FiiO E10 or iPhone 4S as source. (Posted on 3/28/13)

The packaging was pretty slick as well. Enjoyable to unpack and check out. (Posted on 3/5/13)
Strange headphonesReview by Ihar
Overall
Strange headphones. The quality of performance is excellent. The cord is very good. Reliable jack. A good bag to carry your headphones. But the sound is not clear: the high frequencies strongly recessed bass bubnyaschy. Remained with the headphones HiFiMAN RE-ZERO, as they are more linear and closer to my perception of the music. BRAINWAVZ M4 or selling, or will give to someone. (Posted on 2/10/13)
Great ProductReview by Kijana
Overall
My first purchase was the R1's and I got the M4's for the wife. She couldn't be happier with them!

It comes with a hard case that can hold her iPod Nano plus the headphones and all the foam tips that are included in the packaging.

She used them on our recent vacation during the flight and sound isolation was good. They were comfortable and the sound quality was more than adequate.

Neither of us are audiophiles so it is difficult to provide an accurate description of the sound quality...but it is great for us. (Posted on 1/14/13)
Happy New Music Days in everyyearReview by Volodymyr
Overall
I am glad that found "mp4nation"! All goods high quality, frequent purchases only confirm this. Until recently enjoyed brainwavez m2, now it was the turn - brainwavez M4 .... reinforced wire perfectly and securely made "body", deep bass, though less "aggressive" than that of M2. In my view exactly in electronic music M4 will unfold in full. Merry Christmas and HolyMusicDays around the world ;) (Posted on 11/29/12)

Just what I expected Review by sunil
Overall
This is my first Brainwavz product bought from mp4nation.com. I bought Brainwavz M4 for a great price of 28$ when the sale was present and boy they are more than what I spent on them. The bass is perfect. With the comply tips the noise cancellation is about 85% to 90%. I can hear the every instrument playing in the music. These are amazing pair of earphones. I thought of buying them even before the sale was not present. They come with a case, 6pairs of S,M,L buds and 1 pair of comply tips and a clip. (Posted on 11/13/12)

Overall
Brainwavz M4 are perfect for ambient/industrial music. I love listening to Arditi with them. Very comfortable.

Pros:
- Outstanding build quality
- Extremely comfortable
- The cable doesn't tangle
- Microphonics are low even without using the clip!
- Lots of additional plugs

Cons:
- Jack could be better; however its easy to replace it (in case your warranty is over).

Great upgrade for my Galaxy SReview by Max

These earphones made my Galaxy S come to life. I have no idea why I used the stock earphones for so long.

Highly recommended, your ears will thank you :) (Posted on 10/3/12)
Superb bang for buckReview by Sri Harsha
Overall
I was skeptical when I pre-ordered a pair of M4, but I was in for a surprise when compared to the money I spent on this. Eventually ordered a few more pairs for the family after using them for a month.

The package is awesome as usual and the addition of Comply's are good. The original pouch had no inner pockets so it was difficult to carry the tips, but pouches from the new batch that I ordered started to have inner pockets which is really handy to carry portable amp/ Tips or even a extra pair of IEM.

Sound quality is awesome, I like them more than the M2.
I like the instrument separation and the sound stage. A superb bang for buck IEM from Brainwavz. (Posted on 9/22/12)
Wonderful packageReview by Milon
Overall
I bought this earlier this year for 69.50$ with the fiio e6 amp.

I was skeptical about brainwavz products at first since it was a brand that i havent heard that much about but since it had pretty good reviews for the M3, I decided to go ahead and buy the M4's. With FedEx shipping, it got here really quick.

Sound:
When I first tried them on, I didnt feel that impressed, the bass wasn't boomy nor controlled, soundstage felt cramped, and sibilance was present, I thought they were just another pair of overpriced earphones which were just going to be another passing fad. I left them there and decided to give it some time to burn in. After a good 10 hours, I don't know what was it but the sibilance left, the bass reached lower and was far more developped and the soundstage widdened. The overall clarity increased by a whole bunch.

All I can say is that it surpassed my expectations and it quickly became my most used pair of earphones, even surpassing my SE215's.

Sound : 4.5/5

Build Quality + Isolation

Overall the build quality was decent, although I felt that the cable was very thing, it survived quite a bit of abuse. The isolation was great, using comply tips. However, in the end, they still broke due to the heavy abuse from my workout sessions. I would suggest getting the version without the microphone if you don't need it because it's apparently sturdier.

Rating: 3.5/5

Value:

Would I buy this pair of headphones all over again? Yes. At the 69.50$ price? No. If you plan on using it mostly for commuting and on the go listen, it's pretty good, but anything more intense than that, I'd suggest a pair of earphones sturdier.

Value: 3.5/5

Overall: 4/5 (sound is worth the quality issues) (Posted on 9/10/12)
Awesome iems at an unbeatable priceReview by Erik
Overall
A very clear and detailed sounding iem that will rock your ears but not your budget!

pros:

+ detail
+ amp not required
+ isolation
+ multiple tips included (different sizes and one foam)
+ soundstage is pretty good (with foam tips)

Cons:

- That i didnt have these sooner!

I cant think of anything negative to say about these iems, for the price you simply cannot go wrong, plus they come with a sweet little carry case too, what more could you want! (Posted on 8/16/12)
Great Sounding IEM'sReview by Nerdsinc
Overall
I ordered these for my sister to use, and upon listening to them for the first time I was amazed at how it sounded when put with rock and classical genres of music. The clarity and detail was great.

Good product. (Posted on 8/7/12)
Nice upgrade from M2Review by Randy
Overall
This review has been long due since I last purchased my M4 during the last sale where it cost just $28.

When I received it, I was so excited to try it on. Upon trying, sigh. There is driver flex on the right earpiece but I have already expected it due to reading reviews. Wire seems a bit thin.

So, the first eartips I used was the Comply. It gave ultimate comfort and the sound signature I got was a slightly U shape sound. I enjoy the balance of treble and bass.

So after a month or so, I felt that maybe I should try other tips and see how it goes. I went to try the normal (S) tips and yeah! I really feel the energy from the earphone. Very nice beats, soundstage and decent treble (though a bit harsh though).

Compared to my previous M2, which has a darker sound signature and less treble, I feel the balance in M4 with decent balance from each part (low, mid, high).

Nevertheless, I got it at a cheap deal but if I were to purchase at normal price, I would gladly purchase it. (Posted on 7/10/12)
Great valueReview by Cibibikeru
Overall
I already own the M1 so I bought the M4 for an upgrade.
First, I would like to say these are very good built. The aluminium housing is really nice with some fine details. Cable looks very nice too, better than the mic'ed version, loooks durable.
Came with many silicone tips (all sizes) and what I like most the foamies, these are different that those of my M1's, way better. There is also a carrying case that fits my Sansa Clip+ too.

Let's talk about the sound, I coupled them with both my Sansa Clip+ and my Iphone4.

Bass is good, clearly better than my M1, goes deep, a little too much upper bass for my taste, but not boomy, sounds full.

Mids are not recessed, they actually sound a little forward, I found them a little 'shouting" at higher volume, just at the point where the mids end and the highs begin, a thing I didn't encounter with the M1.

Highs is where things could be better, I like hearing detailed highs and while the M4 sounds good overall, I feel like there's something missing. High frequency is present and good but I get the feeling it cuts off at an early frequency, the extension is not that good, but overall it sounds crisp and precise.

Have in mind that this is a personal opinion, i find the M4 a little agressive, while they sound very good, it is not for me, I'll stick with the M1.

Thanks to mp4nation for providing very good sounding iems at very good prices, keep up the good work!

M4 is a wonderful earphone which will meet your needs, if you like listening Rock music. Review by atabay bilge
Overall
Since it is my first Brainwavz product, and my second inearphone i found M4 lack of bass. However i really like the sound quality. The only problem was when i tried to change eartips, i accidentaly pull of the grills, so be careful when you are changing the eartips.

Wonderfully ImmersiveReview by Faheem
Overall
Bought Brainwavz M4 based on a random review I'd read & my initial impressions were far far from impressive,my first pair had practically no soundstage and the buds were playing at different volumes, contacted MP4Nation & a new pair was sent to me.The difference between my original pair & the new ones are night & day.

The M4 is truly an exceptionally good sounding iem,They have a very fun sound signature with lots of controlled bass which never overpowers the mids, mids are good, treble sparkly but not harsh, overall I'm extremely happy with the M4s. (Posted on 6/29/12)
Excellent for metal heads or rock fans. Review by Yunho
Overall
These are pair of earphones I'd suggest to rock fans or metal heads. The sound signature suits these genres the most imo.

Be warned though, you'll need a good seal/fit or else these will sound tinny/bad. If the included tips don't cut it for you the included comply tips should.

Brainwz M4 are perfect.Review by Pawel
Overall
I bought these headphones at a promotional price in the store Mp4nation
The kit included three pairs of silicone tips, one pair of M-ek Comply, nicely made, tough and handy carrying case and clip.

Sound

The sound right out of the box is incredible. The scene is quite extensive, treble and medium looks pretty normal, nothing comes to the fore. I think it plus.Bass not go down very low but is it enough.

Comfort

Headphones very comfortable in the ears, the cable does not tangle too much, it is very solidly constructed.

Pros
+ price
+ solid construction
+ comfrtable
+ comply
+ sound quality
+ good cable that doesn't tangle.

Cons
- Bass could descend

If you are looking for some quality headphones, Brainwz are perfect. (Posted on 6/18/12)
Made for portable listeningReview by kingpage
Overall
Bass is very strong, but not that much more than my HM5. Treble is clear but not sibilant, fatiguing or harsh. The midrange has taken a bit of a back seat, but female vocals sound fantastic (male voice is more distant though). A bit of boom here and there, but not really ear-bleeding painful. It's definitely more mainstream than your everyday audiophile product, IMO.

In summary, I like the M4 much more than I liked its darker little brother M2. M4 isolates as much as my HM5. Despite the change in presentation, I don't feel like I missed out a lot when I went from HM5 to M4. M4 sounds more stereo than HM5s and doesn't have a "deep" V shape (as some has said); instead, emphasis in the bass region is slight, generally clear, with a good sense of air and good detail. But initially I did find the lows were little congested, it seems to have improved after some burn-in. While it may not be bassy enough for true bassheads or balanced enough for those who love accuracy, I can see myself using M4 as a portable 'phone. M4 may be perfect for you when you're on the go and you would like to be able to hear a bit more bass than neutral in noisy environments.

I used to have driver flex issue with the right side when using silicone tips, but as soon as I switched to Comply tips the issue went away. The comply tips are super comfy. BTW, there are 6 pairs of silicone tips instead of the stated 3. (Posted on 6/18/12)
Great pair of IEMs for the priceReview by Francisco
Overall
I just get a feeling Brainwavz knew what they were doing. The M4 has a fun sound signature, you notice the sparkly trebe which extends well, and the deep bass. Vocals are not really recessed, as you would expect them to be with a fun signature. They were detailed and had speed, which I never found in this kind of signature.

The included case was really great, fit my Clip+ like a glove. They come with lots of tips, none of them fit me really well. The cable is one of the best I've seen on an IEM. They are vented so they won't isolate that well.

I lost my pair of M4s and my music player and I'll probably buy a new one. (Posted on 6/17/12)
Excellent Value...Another Brainwavz masterpiece!Review by Dr. Aveek Mukherjee
Overall
As soon as the M4 had been on preorder...I had set my eyes on it...Got it from MP4Nation.com on the Christmas sale for a cool $54.5!
For that much amount, according to me,its bang for the buck!

Packaging:
The package was customary Brainwavz, with lush red colour, with a cut out to see the beauties(and revel). Needless to say,the package came unmolested.
Rating: 5/5

Accessories:
Came as mentioned...The IEMs,artistically put up on a foam holdout,a nice hard carry pack...along with 3 pairs of ear tips,S/M/L...I put the Medium tips for myself..And theres the shirt clip to take care of microphonics...Also there is a pair of the famed Comply S series foam tips...a nice value add...and extends comfort during those long train trips...:)
All these came neatly packed in zip plastic case.
Rating: 4.5/5

Build quality:
The IEMs are built well, those who shun "Made in China" pieces, should rest assured, that its built to last.
The wires look classy, and for a change, are actually averse to messying up...Phew.
The IEM casing is metallic...with a bass port...and the joints look well machined and durable...
The jack is an L type...angled at 90 degrees...some may love it...some might not...I love it...pairs great with my Fiio E6 amp :)
Only gripe is the Y junction...doesnt come up to par with the rest of the build.
Ohh...there is the 1year warranty...so guess we are covered!
Rating: 4.5/5

Sound quality:
Disclaimer: Perception of sound is a personal opinion, please keep it in mind before going up in arms against my observations.

Bass: As is the case with dynamic iems, the M4 excels at low frequencies...I've compared both the M2 n M4,and there seems to be a touch less bass in the M4,but its more punchy, and less aggressive than the M2...Suits me fine though. I especially like the low freq rumble...
Rating: 4.5/5

Midrange: The mids are musical, not too laid back, not too in your face either. The vocals come nice and smooth...with detailing and texturing....it might not be as fast as the Armature driven iems though..but it only costs $50!! Its pleasant to listen to.
Rating: 4/5

Highs: It does quite well for a dynamic iem...at least, imo better than the M2. The details are there...I did not find any sibilance...The highs are not too bright...but presented in a nice laid back fashion...its not dark either...You can hear the high notes, but yes,its not as fast as an armature.Overall,it shares ranks with the better dynamic iems.
Rating: 4/5

Microphonics: Microphonics are always the bane of IEMs in particular...the M4 is,however remarkable in that aspect...If worn over the ear(looks kinda odd though),microphonics are really brought down. Also, using the supplied shirt clip, eases things up.
Rating: 4.5/5

Overall acoustic rating: 4.5/5!

Value:
For $54.5...this is excellent value...considering the features and acoustic performance.
Rating: 5/5

Overall,a nice addition to any collection. Another Brainwavz masterpiece. (Posted on 5/28/12)
